A friend sent me this video. Without seeing the bike I’ve suggested a couple of possibilities.
They say it’s sitting in the correct spot for a narrow wide. I’ve suggested that the ring could be bent or worn, the chain is well worn as possibilities. The rider is strong. 100K at 30kph average on a road bike. I’ve certainly seen bent cassettes from shifting under load. Not sure about a front ring.

Pic of the chainring. I’m thinking it looks a bit worn. But I know some narrow wide rings can look a bit different.

EDIT. Chain was new last week
Looks like a stretched chain. It’s elongated so it’s skipping spaces between the teeths
Some Shimano chains are directional, maybe on backwards?
That would be some kind of crash to bend a chain ring! Plus, from the vid, it hangs up on multiple teeth. If it only started after a new chain, with no other changes, there really are only two options: either the cassette or chain ring are worn, maybe both. My first inclination was a worn chain ring.
