I have a new bike and lots of new gear after spending 10+ years on a Salsa ElMariachi mountain bike for bikepacking.
In theory, I should have more room on this Cutthroat than I ever did on a mountain bike, however, I seem to have run out of space. Maybe I am overlooking something with the way I am packing?
In the yellow bag between my brake levers, I have a Fly Creek UL2 tent, and a 45° sleeping bag with its pad.
Just behind the stem is a canister of pepper spray.
In my Tailfin bag behind the seat, I have just enough clothing to keep me comfortable down to riding at about 40°. I also have rain pants in there. The heaviest items in there include a Patagonia puff jacket, a pair of convertible pants, and a Patagonia quarter zip long sleeve shirt there’s also a pair of full length rain pants in the bag.
In my frame bag I have 2.5 days worth of food, tent poles, toiletry bag, and small first aid kit.
Obviously, I have water bottles on the stays of the Tailfin rack. I also have track running flats strapped to the bottles because the flats are lightweight and very comfortable for off bike time.
In the accessory bag between the handlebars, I have things like a water filter, headlamp, glasses and snacks.
Bungee corded just behind the accessory bag is a rolled up rain jacket.
The two feedbags carry six Clif bars in one of them and a standard squeeze water bottle in the other so I don’t have to mess with unscrewing caps while riding.
The small pack under the seat carries a 20,000 mah powerbank that is connected to the small solar charger on the seat pack.
And finally on the downtube, I have a 1.3 L dry bag full of bike repair items.
I will be leaving for a trip in the Black Hills of South Dakota in a couple of weeks. Most days will be 50 to 60 miles and 5000 to 6000 feet of elevation gain.
With 2 L of water and 2.5 days worth of food, the entire set up weighs 55 pounds.
The bike without any gear on it weighs 22 pounds.
So what do you think? Is the total bike weight a reasonable weight for someone wanting to spend eight or so hours on a bike each day but also be minimally comfortable off the bike? I have always traveled solo and don’t have any real world comparison.
