with bullet-like speed and hundreds of sharp teeth on its jaws and the roof of its mouth the northern pike is a fierce Ambush predator of freshwaters around the world Pikes sit at the top of the Aquatic food web swallowing frogs ducklings squirrels other Pike and anything else they can shove into their giant mouths northern pike prefer to hang around shallow areas of lakes and streams warm well-vegetated areas tend to hold the greatest abundance of northern pike although this type of habitat favors an abundance of smaller Pike big Pike tend to to stay in cooler deeper areas with sparse vegetation the small Pike are smart to avoid the larger ones who are more than happy to eat their younger brothers and sisters Pike Thrive best in waters with moderate levels of dissolved nutrients they’re considered a cool water species struggling at temperatures over 77° Fahrenheit and experiencing optimal growth rates around 68° for adults and 73° for young Pike the best recipe for big fast growing Pike is a cool deep lake with an abundance of large for forage like suckers shiners or cisos like their cousins the muscal lunge and piols Northern Pike are strongly associated with aquatic vegetation they use aquatic plants as spawning substrate Nursery areas for their young and Ambush cover for the adults the plants most often used for spawning are the bases of flooded sedges grasses and bull rushes tall large pond weeds and mixed stands of aquatic plants are most likely to hold large Pike during the majority of the Year these fish can reach speeds of over 10 mph as they dart out to Ambush their unsuspecting prey with a long torpedo like body thick slime coat and fins concentrated near the back like an arrow their prey don’t even see them coming Pike also have pores on their head that assist their lateral line system in detecting vibrations and disturbances in the water because of this a pike can follow the path of its prey even when the prey can’t be seen in the winter and spring it’s common to catch Pike with red circular sores on their body these are from a disease called lymphosarcoma and the sores can develop into large bulging tumors this disease will not spread to humans but it can be transferred between Pike contacting each other during spawning it can also be spread to healthy Pike through Landing Nets or fish mats that were previously used with diseased fish Pikes start to seek out spawning habitat as soon as the ice starts to break up males are sexually mature at only 1 to 2 years old and females at 2 to 3 years old most spawning happens when the water is between 34 and 50° f a mature female full of eggs will head into a shallow area or a flooded Wetland where one or more males will follow and vibrate against her upwards of 50,000 eggs can be laid by a single large female these fish are known as broadcast spawners meaning that their sticky eggs are scattered directly on aquatic vegetation where the eggs can be continuously supplied with oxygen by the water currents eggs will hatch within a couple of weeks the young Pike are fed by their yolk sack for several days and then begin eating small invertebrates and eventually each other birds and large invertebrates like dragonfly larvae and giant water bugs will also Feast on the young Pike brighter warmer weather conditions trigger the young to start moving out of wetlands and into larger bodies of water one to two-year-old Pike are often called snakes or Hammer handles a reference to their long narrow shape by the time it reaches 3 years old a pike has typically grown to about 18 in 24 in by Age 4 and 30 to 36 in by age six the most important habitat for producing healthy Pike is shallow vegetation and connected wetlands without this critical spawning habitat and Nursery zone for young Pike populations steadily decline studies of Pike populations in lakes with heavily Disturbed shorelines full of rocks Lawns and seaw walls found the pike to be below average in abundance and size even for beginners Pike are fairly easy to catch a medium power rod with 10 to 20 lb line is ideal spooled on a spinning reel or a bait caster Pike are very aggressive and like to chase down lures that make a lot of noise or vibration like spinner baits inline Spinners paddletail swim baits crankbaits frogs and spoons use a heavy leader when you know a lot of around they’re very good at biting the line and stealing your lures and after you catch one be sure to hold it tightly behind the head so it doesn’t launch out of your hands thanks for watching we’ll catch you next time

Really nice Thumbnail
Awesome video. I like the thumbnail too
Hope we can see some more fish bio videos
A couple buddies of mine want to get me into fishing, and all these recent how to videos have been amazing.
Pike are easy to HOOK, after that things get difficult. Per pound they can strip more line off a reel than most freshwater species, they know just about every dirty trick and have an evil genious for using everything to their advantage. Once landed they are the least cooperative species I've ever come across, and enjoy trying to mangle anything that gets near their mouth. You gently release them, and they usually manage to soak you as they swim off.
Nice video though I gotta say, personally not a huge fan of the AI thumbnail. Overall good vid though
This format of video is what I've always been looking for and constantly failing to find with other fishing channels. A comprehensive guide on the life cycle of a fish is, in my opinion, the absolute best way to figure out how to catch it. Other channels seem to just go out in their expensive boats, go over 1 or 2 fishing methods they like to use, and then hock whatever lures they're being paid to advertise. This is a truly valuable resource, well done.
God, I love catching these fish
Unhook them boat side if possible. Nets and handling them removes their protective slime coating. I use a long needle nose and generally fish barbless.
Excellent Video – enjoyable and Informative.
I love pike. I love a fish that comes to the boat looking PISSED !!! My largest is 44" on Lake of the Woods (Canadian side).
You want the monsters go out at dusk and watch for schools . Then start ripping the edges of it. Caught some monsters on fly in in northern ontario
My favorite pike lure is a spinner bait. Not the inline ones. The V shaped wire on the front keeps them from biting it off so I can run without a leader safely. It doesn't seem to me that it's big enough to keep them from just swallowing it, but I also have never had one bitten off like other lures, and have fished them ten times as often for those results.
Amazing video!
everyone I know including myself try to avoid cacthing thoze slimey things they look cool but you can have em …
I consider them to be fresh water barracudas… I have always thought it would be interesting to put a tag on them to see how much they move around in a lake system. I would think they would be always on the move…
love the videos and love catching nothern pike!!
Pike are tasty. They are also boney. Just got to filet those fish carefully. A pike sees a yellow perch and he is instantly hungry. The perch is nailed just like that. Yow!!
New catch and release fisher here. If i do net a pike with lymphosarcoma, what is the best way to clean my net so i dont spread it around?
I remember catching my first pike. Tried to land it in putting my thumb in its mouth like I would with a bass. Won't do that again!
How did you make the thumbnail and the one with the ducks?
Northern pike will dessimate all other large spawning-age fish. As their method of attack for large spawning fish is to t-bone large fish and continue to push the large fish in such a manner that water ceases to flow over gills. Once weakened, and well advertised to other pike who follow for a group feast. The females also carry 3X+ more eggs than other species. Northern pike will take over all other species in same waters
Hello Nat,
Thanks for sharing your observations and experience. You sound like a biologist. Where did you collect your data? What have your learned regarding their feeding habits during winter when in shallow 8' – 15' or deep lakes 16'-100' (random) lakes are frozen. Do you understand how Pike stage on shelfs or near tributaries. I have made several observations with cameras while ice fishing in deep clear lakes where is appears that Pike can be trended, What I don't understand is what is triggering the Pike to hunt or transition. I ASSume it is several factors to include efficiency, but water temperature and barometric pressure are common coincidental observations. I'd like to better understand what causes Pike to be where they are and feed when they do feed. Do you know any references that really get into the weeds regarding Pike. Thanks again.
Very informative, general info. Own footage. Solid delivery. Well done.
is braided light line good for fishing??
Freshwater Barracuda
I’d love to see a video like this about lake trout or walleye
Pike are really just fresh water Baracuda!
Very informative!…
I’ll admit I’m a steelhead snob..pike are fun and easy to catch…always fun
Great video! Would love more videos like this on different species.
Got a 23 and 7 8ths northern off the breakeall the other day in michigan.
Nice video!
I love pike, great fight and good to eat if prepared properly, tough to clean for me. I always use mepps as a lure
Great video
Wtf?..pike-cancer?.

omfg… That release at the 37 second mark had me bricked up, so sexy.
How to distinguish which fish is female and which is male??
Hope we don’t overfish these guys.. it might be the land of 10,000 lakes but I’ve noticed a decrease. My grandpa used to tell me that they used to gather fisherman to fish certain lakes near brainard and fish as many as they could within a weekend to stop them from eating all smaller walleye. They would catch so many they would use them to make fertilizer for their farms. After pickling a choice few of course.
Few things make me happier than having a pickerel or pike come off the hook. This family of fish has no chill and unhooking trebles from them is just a sketchy process when they keep struggling.
Pike have very sharp teeth so wire leaders are good.
how did u get those ai pics in their there awsome
Back in the 50s and 60s we would vacation in Little Current Ontario, my dad like to troll for Pike in the North Channel, back then it was lamphery marks that were the bane of pike, I remember the thrill of catching one even at the age of 7 or 8
Caught pike in Canada on fingernail clippers, I was bored
Such an amazing video
Absolutely love your videos. Not a fan of the weird ai art you use sometimes though lol 😅 not that it’s bad (which it is) it is also just unethical lol I’d ask that you don’t keep using them but you do you and I will keep watching either way 🙂
Caught a 105cm 8kg pike today
