I purchased this bike off facebook fall of last year and have finally gotten into the habit of riding regularly.
I think I’ve identified it as being made in March of 1978 following a forum post explaining serial numbers. This one is Y803 26972, and its only located as a stamp on the rear dropout. I have read that sometimes the number is not accurate to the original as it is etched by bike shops, so that date may be slightly wrong. The Normandy hubs are stamped 16 78 on the rear and 17 78 on the front.
I plan on adjusting the handlebars and brakes to make them more comfortable, and replacing the rear basket with something more attractive and period accurate. The bar end shifters dont appear to be original and I kind of hate them, so I wouldnt be opposed to replacing those with something else if anyone has a recommendation!
Seems like it. Alloy Rigida rims, (boy I miss those) cotterless alloy cranks, better components. It’s funny how there are millions of U08s out there but you never see a U10. I’ve seen way more PX10s. SO it’s either one extreme or the other.
The bike came with the metal Simplex downtube shifters which seem like a pain if you’re you’re used to modern brifters. You can certainly go back to them if you’re into that whole erotica movement. But there’s no hard fast rules about anything, you can do whatever you like with it. It’s a cool bike, enjoy it.
