Basically I'm trying to decide whether i should go via Kaunas or not.
Has anyone riden these routes and can comment? Kamoot by default gives route that does not go over Kaunas but when i compared the routes the kilometers are the same. The split between road types and surface is almost the same even leaning better towards Kanaus route. (Route difference posted as image in comments)

After dealing with many unpaved sandy roads in Poland which have been a nightmare I'm scared to repeat the same thing here.

Any advice would be great.

No idea, unfortunately, as I’m going the other way. I’ll probably be in mid Estonia around the same time as you (assuming you’re going that far), as I’m currently in Sweden about to take a ferry over to Finland and then another to Estonia in a week or so. I can give you advice for this side of things if you want 🙂

These things are subjective. Do you want to visit Kaunas? Sandy roads depend on the exact route you pick and the weather.
