who you are what you’ve done in each of Our Lives amen thanks guys for leading us isn’t it good just to stop everything and remember that this is the god that we serve and focus on him just for a few minutes puts everything back in perspective for us so um because God is Holy and we are not yet that’s why we’re going through the Ten Commandments it’s not because God wants to tell us off it’s because God wants us free because all the stuff that’s in the Ten Commandments is like Pat that stuff up life will be much better for you so if you want a better life then hang on in here because we’ve got Steve Plum speaking to us [Music] today yeah so Steve is a retiring policeman he’s not quite retired yet but he’s almost there so he’s been serving our community for a long time now but even in this retiring phase he’s continuing to do that with as much dedication uh as he did in the police force whether he’s making you a copper or whether he’s getting alongside vulnerable youth or whether he’s speaking today on a subject that’s a little bit well I would have picked it I’ll tell you that for nothing Thou shalt not murder so let’s welcome Steve shall we and then we’ll pray for [Applause] him I’m going to pray for you father we thank you for this man this man who loves you and wants to share what you’ve laid on his heart with us so will you open our ears our hearts our Spirits so that we grab a hold of what it is you’ve got for us individually and corporately that we can be Freer by the end of our time together today than we would have been if we hadn’t have heard what he said through you I ask this for our blessing in Jesus name amen thanks Reena my word you’re an intimidating audience in some respects so let’s be honest there are liars amongst us there are thieves amongst us and there are people who coveted um other people’s belongings and that’s just me let alone you I have a sneaky suspicion that when Sue asked me to uh speak on with Ten Commandments that she knew I’d choose murder I don’t know why um but I think that she did so I thought how can I do it in a different way other than standing up in front of yourself uh and just speaking off a PowerPoint and just make it more impactive because let’s be honest murder is a step out there isn’t it really we we can accept that we’ve stolen something up our employers at some time or other we can accept that we may have told a lie at times or other even if we turn it a white lie because those are good lies aren’t they they’re not they’re not bad lies and we can oh they’ve got a nice for St and I’ve just got Ford focused I want the St especially with the body Linings and everything like that we we’ve all done those kind of things but murder no me never so I thought how can I make it a different and then I thought well I could act it out I thought no that wouldn’t really work that well and then I thought about expressive dance and I’m [Applause] folks I’m not going to embarrass myself or go that far so strangely enough I resorted to going back to a couple of stories one’s going to be biblical which you may or may not know the other one is a little bit more personal and intersperse some Bible knowledge there as well I thought that would be the way to reach yourselves and I believe the Lord uh is okay with that on the left hand side I’ll draw your attention to the amnesty bin I’m not expecting it to be full of soff shotguns or knives or knuckle dusters uh at the end of the morning but it may be full of paper where you think I’ve expressed anger in a way which I shouldn’t have done I’ve sort of like held feelings inside myself which have turned me towards bitterness and hatred to those around myself that is if the spirit directs you to and I won’t be upset if throughout the morning people start to come forward and fill out pieces of paper and put them in the bin we won’t read them uh that’s something which is sort of like personal to you uh they’ll get destroyed um but it’s a good sign of you changing your ways so let’s move on with the first story then there’s this policeman I know he was on duty uh with eight of his colleagues in a Riot Van coming towards the end of the shift and they were looking forward to going home it was a warm Winter’s evening but unfortunately on the way back to the station there’s a call for a stabbing in a local Street they looked on their mapping and they knew that they were the closest resource there so they rocked up in the van the lights were going no Sirens because it was late at night we don’t want to wake people up obviously and there was this young man lying in basically the entrance to his house house it was a Terrace Street but it was one of those strange Terrace streets where they’ve got a little bit of the front garden in front of themselves with a brick wall so the police officers got out they dragged the young man out so they could get 360 degree access to him himself went back to the vehicle got the first aid kit started doing CPR on a gentleman and called in paramedics thankfully the paramedics turned up but before that the officer started using the defib on individual paramedics turned up and then uh the flying Squad doctor turned up he was doing things to that gentleman which you’d only see in an operating table in an A&E or in a operating theater by this time other police officers had turn up and they’ started canvasing the witnesses and speaking to the individuals around and one individual sort of like he stood out about the same age as the person he was lying on the floor with blood pouring out of himself while the officers were up working on him he’d Got A Cut Above his eye and people were saying he was involved he had a fight with that gentleman so that young man was arrested Under Suspicion of attempted murder and placed in the back of the car with that police officer and he tried to make conversation with him not about what had happened cuz that would have been wrong but about the day about football all but there was nothing there it was though the lights were on but nobody was at home it was like the thousand yard there eventually unfortunately the gentleman who was being worked upon he was declared deceased at the scene and that young man got arrested on suspicion and murder that night two lives were lost in all honesty the life of the young man who was dead and the life of a young man who was subsequently prosecuted and convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment as well as those two lives being lost two families will never recover from that and you’re sat there with emotion running through M and you’re thinking well that would never be me I would never do such a thing and thankfully I don’t believe it would be anyone in here but it’s not that far much of a step from having being angry with someone just going forward and doing something like that you’re thinking why does that affect me then why does that instant affect myself in that city which is not that far away from here let’s look at some facts and figures just to bring it back into a clinical version and then we’ll move on to a Biblical side so the average cost of a murder in 2018 was £ 3.2 million that was in 2018 now we’re in 2024 uh with inflation you do the maths maths was never my strong point up until March 2023 there were 590 murders in the UK so 590 murders at the a average cost of £ 3.2 million to investigate each murder Mur the average cost of a year in jail for a prisoner is 47,000 pound per anom and life imprisonment is a minimum term of 20 years there was seven uh gentlemen convicted of murder in Birmingham on Friday of last week so 7 time 20 times 470,000 basically you look at virtually 7 million quid by the time that they’ve served their time but it doesn’t need to be like that in any way shape or form because we are not designed to actually commit murder it’s it’s the heest crime and this is the first time we referred to in notes which is good for me life is from God the Lord God formed a man from the dust of ground and the Man became a living being Genesis 2: 7 life comes from God God created human beings in his own image in the image God he created them male and female he created them Genesis 1 ver 27 from a New Living Translation as we are created in the image of God we are meant to be social beings who interrelate with one another God himself is interrelational there’s the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit we too are meant to be dependent upon one another in family and at work both being examples of this murder is related to anger the Bible quite early on gives us an example of this and this is the Bible story so two brothers born to a mother and father those who are parents in this room will say that you always treat treat your children the same way let’s be honest you may think that you treat them the same way that I was out with my sister uh last week and she harps on about the fact that during her childhood she never received a bike I did but that is a still a bone of contention for herself I never went uh on school cruises or on a skiing trip but it doesn’t really bother me but my fact that my sister never received her bike thinks that she was treated by differently by my parents she wasn’t because we had the same amount of money spent on us and the same amount of time giv to ourselves but in different ways these two brothers one was given a name of importance and he grew up to be a farmer of renown and great purpose the other gentleman let’s give him a name shall we Abel so he uh was given a name which briefly meant that sort of like the wind he became a Shepherd not so important but then they were called their offerings to God they both rocked up to give their offerings to God and Cain give the offering of the fruit of the land Abel being the Shepherd that he was gave the best cut of the best meat of the best sheep that he hadd ever got and found favor in the eyes of the Lord guess what Cain became very angry and his face was downcast the Lord said to Cain why are you angry why is your face downcast if you do what is right will you not be accepted but if you do not do what is right sin is crouching at your door it desires to have you but you must rule over it now Liz and I have a cat which visit us and it crouches at the door and as soon as our back is turned it enters into our house and steals with food and the offerings which are laid down for our cats and that for me is a really good example of how sin will Crouch uh at your lives you should never turn your back should always be aware of its desire to have you and you must rule R over it so for us to rule over this cat which crouches at our door we shut the door we don’t let it in sorry for the Browns over there so we know that Cain went on to murder AEL and tried to hide his sin uh from the Lord but the Lord knew everything about it Jesus when he spoke about murder went further linking anger to murder so anger is cited in 50% of all murder cases so this is where we look at ourselves now and think have I in thought or word but not deed thankfully broken this commandment I have definitely when I’ve been cut up at an is land and wished uh the person some Misfortune for want to the better phrase so we’ll look at what the Lord said he said You shall not murder and anyone who murders will be suspect to judgment but I tell you anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment again anyone who says to a brother or sister raaka is answerable to the court and anyone who says you fool will be in danger of the fire of hell now raaka is an Aramaic uh word it it’s an insult it means empty-headed or I wish you’d not been being born but it’s also compared to spit so you’re comparing a human being who was formed in the image of God to something which you’re going to expel from your body uh whenever you got a cold or you’re running how worthless is that spit which you’ve just expelled onto the floor in front of you and you’re probably going to put your foot into it and just move it away You’re comparing a human being to that now you sat there thinking well God gets angry Ang Ry and you’re right he does the word anger is used 455 times in the Bible and 375 times it refers to God himself but strangely enough god is perfect in his anger he is righteous in his anger we are not he gets angry over Injustice I’m sure when he looks at the plinth on the front of the conservative party and he says stop the boats he’s angry over that because there’s no mention of the humanity that is contained within their boats and they’re leaving their land for whatever reason and to show that I’m not biased in any way shape or form I’m sure he gets angry over the lies and hypocrisy one thing which comes to mind in fact two things which come to mind are the poison blood Scandal which has encompassed both governments labor and conservative for numerous years and the post office Scandal I’m sure he gets angry over that he gets angry over those who inject pain and suffering Hamas and the IDF spring to mind at this time let alone the conflicts in the Sudan or other areas we however get angry sometimes at the slightest thing I’ve mentioned being cut up at a roundabout being looked out the wrong way in a nightclub or being bumped into which was a cause of death of a person in Birmingham he was bumped into a nightclub wrongly and they hunted him down and stabbed him to death on a dance floor three days later his crime just bumping into a person on a dance floor Q jumping to name but three that’s a very British thing isn’t it if you go abroad and you’re there in the queue and someone from a foreign foreign National comes in front of you they don’t understand the principle of cues because they’re not brought up that way they haven’t done anything wrong uh in their mind uh because it’s a very British thing it is how the anger in yourself manifests itself that is where the danger lies I know it’s hard to believe but I was an Angry Young Man myself the wars in Craven Street will testify to that and so are my uh Knuckles upon occasion so what do we do with our anger if you’re sat there this morning thinking that I’m an angry young man or woman because I’ve seen what a stiletto heel can do in the hands of a young lady under the influence of alcohol it’s a terrible weapon then you may need to come forward later if the spirit convicts you and get someone to pray for you if you’re thinking how do I actually deal with my anger then prayer is a Wonder thing also the person sat next to you to the left or to the right of you is a wonderful person you can share your feelings with him or her and say I’ve got an issue with this please pray for me help me first and foremost think about your anger is it righteous the issue which you’re dealing with at this moment in time time think right what would the Lord do would he write a petition can I put my name to a petition can I go on a March I wouldn’t Advocate going on a March and committing criminal damage because that would be wrong but going on a March and uh protesting that would be a righteous way to actually express your anger about an issue which may be happening in the world at this moment in time so as previously stated the Bible has got many verses within it as regards anger I’m just going to read out a few uh and then I’m going to uh see where the spirit leads ourselves and yourselves as regards how we deal with this issue so we’ve dealt with murder let’s put it out there thankfully no one in here has actually committed the deed as far as I know but the thought and the word I have and if you inspect yourself in your spirit then I’m going to apply to suggest that the majority of you may have so James 1: 19 to 20 says be quick to listen slow to speak speak slow to anger for human anger does not produce the righteousness that the Lord desires so when you’re in the midst of that argument with your work colleague or your partner or your brother or your sister think about how can I sort of like just hold myself within myself before I respond to it Proverbs 14: 29 says whoever is slow to anger has great understanding but he who has a hasty temper exalts Folly that speaks to itself do it really Ephesians 4: 26- 27 do not let the sun go down on your anger and give no opportunity to the devil for those in relationship ships when you’ve had an argument uh with your partner and and you go to bed and that anger is still there that chasm in the bed it’s like the king size is become a grand king size and there’s like that gap down the middle and you oh you can’t get to sleep because you’re worrying about what you’ve said it might be the same for those who are not in relationship but those who uh were work they have an argument with their colleague and they’re dreading the following day coming back in to speak to their colleague and thinking right how can I get on with him or her and get the work to where it should be Psalm 37: 8 verse 8 sorry don’t give into worry or anger it only leads to trouble and Ephesians 4:2 9 says attack the problem but not the person so if you have an issue with someone at home at work dare I say it even within Church there may be something which you need to sort out through conversation through dialogue but don’t attack that individual attack the problem whatever it may be I hope this morning has drawn you to question what you do with your anger how you exhibit it what I would say to yourself is don’t contain it you need to find a positive outpouring of it because anger contains leads to bitterness and bitterness leads to hatred and hatred to acts of in old evil uh Liz drew me to the fact that she heard a holocaust Survivor um speak recently and that Survivor said you can dislike things and we all do I dislike mipan but I don’t hate it but drawing it back to a serious thing you can dislike things which are happening in the world but don’t hate those things use your anger in a righteous way to deal with the issue now I’m sure that quite a lot of you are utilizing the the Leo um thing which is available on digital format so I’ve basically written my own Leto prayer so you don’t necessarily need to close your eyes um but can I ask a musician to come forward and play some jingly jangly bit please so I’ll be honest with you uh let’s C 365 at night by the time that the first two or three lines have been um spoken out I’m normally asleep um but I’m hoping that this is not the case this morning I’ll just wait for Sue to get ready to play some jingly jangly so if the spirit convicts you to come forward uh there’s paper down there there’s pencils to write down where you’ve offended someone you’ve been angry you’ve let your anger come out in a way which is not righteous uh please feel free to do so so if you uh don’t feel uh obliged to close your eyes however the day has come the preach is done father in this moment of quiet reflection may your spirit bring love to my heart peace to my mind and cause my soul to reflect where I’ve been angry without just cause I ask for your forgiveness and choose not to remember the occasions when people have angered myself Lord not for myself but for your glory and for the sake of your kingdom I ask it in your precious name [Music] amen um it’s um a challenging word isn’t it I’ve still not mastered being a Christian in the car just can’t do it just can’t do it always saying God please help me to be righteous live properly in the car CU like Steve says as soon as somebody cuts me off that’s it um but there is such a a deep reality in what Steve said that the enemy loves for it to start in a small praise where just a little bit ticked off about something and then can escalate into something horrific and we are held prisoners in that now it doesn’t have to be just about um Thou shalt not murder today any of The Commandments that you know maybe got something’s been percolating in you for a few weeks now and you think yeah I know that I need to get this sorted out with God then um can I ask those that are wearing your landlords that are part of the prayer team if if you would gather down the sides so that um if you want prayer today cuz you know I can’t let go of this by writing it down on a bit of paper or just sitting here myself and know I need someone to pray for me then um please take opportunity while we worship God again is that okay [Music] Lord you have my heart and I will search for yours Jesus take my life andad me [Music] on Lord you have my heart and I will SE for yours let me be to to you a sacri I will praise you praise you I will sing [Music] Love Will Sing of love you show youra we see your [Music] GL Lord you have my heart and I will SE for Jesus take my life and me Lord you have my heart and I will search for yours let me be to new stirring as we pray and S on our on [Music] our hosana in the highest hosana hosana in the heart highest hosana in the [Music] highest come my heart and make it Jesus open up my eyes through the highest hosana [Music] hosana hosana in the highest hosana in the [Music] high thank you Jesus thank you see that’s the thing that um God was angry with us because we chose sin but it didn’t come back at us sorting us out he sent his son to die so that we could know that freedom and so the challenge for us the challenge I’m taking home today is do I treat other people the same way still going to work at folks cutting me up at the roundabout but you know it’s um it’s why there’s a war in Ukraine it’s why there’s a war in Israel it’s why there’s murders committed because it’s started somewhere with somebody getting angry with another human being that was made in God’s image as Steve so eloquently ped too much stuff on this thing today um so guess what time it is now boring announcements they’re exciting they’re always exciting um so um uh on Saturday uh the 1 of June it’s going to be linger Anna do you want to just come and remind us what linger is for those that perhaps missed it Thursday um yes so we’ve been feeling for a while that God is calling us to create space to meet with him with no time no agenda Sunday mornings are amazing but I know we have dinners to get to and jobs to go and do so we are creating space on a Saturday night once a month um to meet with God and it’s a journey it’s going to be different each time we don’t really know what we’re doing that’s kind of the point but that’s also exciting also if you’re a creative person if you want to bring colors and paints or whatever just whatever way you um can connect with God and meet with him and we’re just creating space for that to happen last time was fantastic and like I said it’s going to be different and we’re on a journey and we’re learning and we’re growing each time and but yeah on Saturday 7 o’clock love to see you there thanks an it and I have a sign up sheet here and I’m afraid it is not um an allinclusive sorry I know because it’s for the ladies it’s for all us women so if you coming to the women’s weekend and you’ve not signed up yet then please can you get your name on there today that would be grand uh and that’s because we’re going to have uh so it’s on Friday the 14th in the evening and Saturday until lunchtime and we’ve got a meal on the Friday night and we’ve got um brunch on the Saturday and so um we need to have numbers for catering basically um or you can make message um a phone or email Sarah in the office and she’ll sort it for you um foundations program this week is about baptism and communion so if you’ve not popped along yet and you’d like to then by all means do um we are still in need of volunteers for all our Outreach products and our lovely group of people who look after everything we had Gremlins this morning before the service folks Gremlins and they were sorted out because those teamwork at the back and John said last week it’s not as hard as we all think so if you want if you think I know but I’ve I really got anything to offer I don’t know if I’ve got the skills I don’t know if I’m confident enough talk to the people who run teapots who do the sound desk all that kind of stuff and they will help you to understand whether you’re somebody that could fit into that um there’s also so if you’re a if you’re the sort of person that likes to do something challenging and you want to raise funds there’s several youth projects that are looking for all kinds of different things and it’s in our notices this week if you haven’t signed up for the notices I’d recommend that you do um because you get you don’t miss anything then you get to see it all and if you want to be a regular Giver to TCC then you can do that through a q QR code and there’s other bits and pieces around that help you to know how to give uh but if you want to give physically then there’s um giving boxes at the front and the back there and I just wanted to um highlight so I’ve I’ve had two Ukrainian young ladies who’ve been to stay in my house for the last two years or so since the war started and a third one is arriving in just over a week’s time because the War hasn’t changed this young woman is um only in her 30s got no job prospects no chance of having a relationship and starting a family because all those young men have gone to the front line and so it it can be challenging at times to have people that you don’t know well living in your home but if you if the Lord prompts you I can promise you the rewards are great to know that you’re giving that young person it’s I see like it’s a very temporary fostering but for an adult that’s how I how I look at it so it’s the same kind of thing that you know if you feel like fostering is for you then take that plunge do that thing because it means that those vulnerable people and the two girls that have stayed with me in the past they are living such great lives now because they just found somewhere safe to land for a few months I was able to introduce them to Jesus as well which were really great for me um and so yeah I just wanted to say let’s make sure that we um keep Ukraine in our prayers yesterday’s news said that um it’s as bad now as it was at the beginning two two years ago so and there’s lots of places so you know what shall we just all stand and gather in little groups and pray for any War that’s going on I think it’s very in line with what Steve’s preached today so let’s just stand and pray in little groups for any War that’s going on and I’ll finish with a prayer e e e okay folks be blessed and serve the Lord and enjoy your coffees
