I bought an older but seemingly well kept Trek road bike from a friend. After a few months of light to medium riding, this happened today. I plan to bring the bike in to my local trek shop but I'm afraid to see how much it may cost to fix.

Can you take a clearer photo standing further away? Seems like the rear deraileur broke off. If its the deraileur then a new one costs 20-700 bucks depending on the brand and model
Just a broken derailleur hanger, about $30 for the part, likely $20-30 in labor if you have a shop install it for you.
Good news; the part that broke is designed to snap in the event of a crash to ‘save’ the derailleur. Replacement derailleur hangers are pretty cheap and usually easy to replace. It’s worth ensuring that the derailleur isn’t toast, but it should work fine even if it’s a bit scratched up.
There are more than 250 derailleur hangers, each specific to a particular bike brand and type. It’s a simple repair, usually one or two screws to replace it.
