Basically the title. I used to ride just with my Phone and the komoot app, so there was no calorie-tracking. Yesterday I did my first ride with my new Igps630s and it told me i bruned off over 2100 calories in ~3 hours. Before my device tracked my calories I estimated to burn 300-400 calories an hour. So this ride in my "old" calculations would burn off 900-1200 calories.
Do you guys think my new device is overestimating my calories spent oder did I severly underestimate my calories bruned over the last few months?

Unless you have a power meter, calories burned are just a guess, and not a very good one.

  2. It’s hard to tell. But unless your intensity was super super high, or you are very over weight, that estimation is easy too high. I think 1200 is possible in 3 hours of hard work.

  3. Unless you use a heart rate sensor, you will not get good results. These are based on speed, and distance in relation to the height and weight you provided in the app. It completely ignores your state of fitness.

Looks like it’s also an estimate of your basal calories plus the activity.

In that amount of time and distance, I get about 1900 total on a heavy bike and carrying gear with climbs and undulations. This is using an HR belt and cadence sensor.

  5. My Samsung health app gives me an estimate of 700Cal per hour cycling which exactly like the estimate here, and I have roughly the same average speed as you, I think 300Cal/hour is a bit too low..

That would depend on a lot of factors. I’m female 130lb and can burn 1000+ cal in 90 min if I’m going hard (Based on power meter data).

I see your average speed for this ride is on the lower side, so I doubt that you burned that much but maybe there was a headwind or you are on a heavier bike or a bigger person… regardless, I’m pretty sure your probably burning a lot more than 400 per hour.
