has been crushed by a war collapsing on them then you’re concerned about multiple catastrophic injuries head injury Crush injury fractures of the chest pelvis spinal cord injury can we move number one to number four this one in number one any of those injuries can all present an immediate threat to life he’s a 38-year-old chat the wall fell onto him obvious injuries unspecified head injury arm and leg bruising chest injuries there was a lot of sirens I said to my husband that sounds like a really bad accident somewhere and 5 10 minutes later my phone went and it was the police saying that Steven had been in an accident as a parent it’s the most brightening thing that something’s happened to your child I felt totally helpless we just jumped in the Land Rover and went to fetch Steven’s wife JMA there I was at work when there’s a knock at the door and that’s when Karen told me Steve had an accident I didn’t know what to think I just literally just out crying I just didn’t just kind of clung on to each other just terrified just see that actual wall it come straight down on him I just thought oh is that it okay patience here we’re ready for you this is Steve he’s 38 working on a rural Farmhouse 65 minutes ago the whole Gable wall of the stone farm house fell onto him buried from head to foot we the first on things find a gentleman in the left lateral position with a large bleeding wound above the left eye looking to go down skull the left eye closed but able to open the right eye complaining of the left side of chest pain with breathing difficulty been getting transferred be happy ready rce move hello hello seen aood pressure [Music] yet when a patient presents with multiple injuries you are thinking about what you need to prioritize head injuries can be devastating the pressure could be building inside the brain with every minute that passes that could be causing more damage and they can deteriorate very very quickly some warning scan sooner rather than later CC trauma so it’s going to be the head down to the pelvis and everything in between Steve does everything for us we’ve got monitoring equipment without him we’ be lost Airway secure we’ve got spinal protection every morning we say bye and we go after it we didn’t imagine that he wouldn’t be there when we got [Music] home Steve Steven is being taken for an urgent CT t scan after a 22 footstone wall collapsed on him at work a second sweetheart we just going to move you onto this other bed all right this is the CT scanner okay doctors are concerned about potentially life-changing pregnancy the love that you have for your own baby it’s just overwhelming when they put the baby in your arms for the first time it’s just unbelievable it’s just a real magical [Music] experience all when a patient has sustained multiple injuries that can be very very serious you’re looking at that initial report of the CT scan you’re then thinking right okay what’s the priority which other Specialties do I need to involve and are there any treatments that I need to put into place straight away myself you need to act fast the risk is that the patient could deteriorate very very [Music] concerned about is sepan pelvic any injuries to the chest and the abdomen can be life-threatening the boy’s dad is traveling with him in the ambulance we set off early morning to drive to Motocross he Crush injuries when a wall fell on him at work just yeah initial scans have shown he has a collapsed lung and needs an urgent chest drain Stephen can I have a look at your chest then just going to work out where we’re going to pop a drain in a collapsed lung can be life-threatening if it’s possible can you take some deep brass in and out with your mouth open for me the condition can deteriorate and the lung can collapse further and then at that point the patient can really be struggling to breathe all right Steven so just a a little scratch okay when I first met Steve I was out on a Hu the last Pub we went to there was a party already there in his um Dancing Away having drinks and that I noticed Steven we’re both very shy but once we got chatting that’s when yeah and he he was the one basically sorry Stephen so just very steady movement first dance for our wedding we dance to Michael Jackson’s man in the mirror I can feel my finger just above the rib and we just basically a big cheese fest of all the songs that we liked Steve was pretending to rap to Ice Ice Baby it was just a big a big party really from when we first got together Stevens always spoke about wanting wanting bone has gone looks quite close to where the arteries are if there’s damage to the arteries leading to the brain then that can result in the brain not receiving adequate blood supply and death of the brain tissue seeit that could potentially be something that can cause really devastating long-term injuries and even be fatal [Music] here we are my de we’ve had it’s your 73rd birthday marel oh boy long blonde curly glasses he looked like the Milky bar kid he’s a toddler he’d go in a bath he’d put his head under the water to see how he could hold his breath for to the point where he were passing out um jump off the end of the sofa some assaults trampoline in push back yeah it were it were it were Bonkers I’d say it’s very similar to how I were I’d like to think that were father and some Bond straight away I just try to make sure I see watch Kobe play football or ride his bike because it’s something that my dad weren’t able to do when I were a kid it was always a way working I London but he worked really really hard to get everything we needed to get [Music] my mom she were battling bowel cancer well before me and my sister were born the doctors told her she’d never have children in fact she had three healthy children as kids we never spoke about it she fought it for probably 20 years we can get this guy she were at home most of the time she ran the house she did everything we needed she were brilliant absolutely fantastic we had a really good relationship very lucky really really lucky so what’ll happen now KOB somebody have a quick look at all your scans just text about 45 minutes to get proper reports back take so he could go to xray xray xris and left shoulder right so we’re going to x-ray then Kobe before we go back Kobe never met mom but I don’t hug for me coming home from deployment to see my wife after we lost our baby it was devastating don’t know just can’t re explain it it stuck with you it never leaves you after that period of difficulty we decided to give it another try even though how painful it was at the time we thought it was worth it and it was that Tasha felt pregnant again we were both happy all righty so we’re just behind the screen we’re still in the room I’d always wanted a girl as a first child that first moment of holding her I just remember seeing her face thinking this is like the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen and breathe normally beautiful Lea that’s us all finished no problem I think biggest challenge in my life in the Army is dealing with family life and work life just trying to get a balance between the two it’s hard it’s difficult I’m falling asleep and tired know I’ve accumulated over 2 and A4 years away from home it does hurt but I’m doing it at the end of the day for them chest x-ray looks fine there’s no sign that the teeth are anywhere in the lungs yeah in terms of X-rays of the face today they will do those X-rays at an emergency dentist in the meantime it’s just going to be lots of regular pain relief warm water with a small amount of salt in just to do grines and just really soft diet until you’ve seen the dentist yeah and my dad has to tell my mom because he’s usually in better days are you in a lot of pain just going to feel the outside of your face okay with both always wanted to have a family and have children but I developed a heart murmur and they found one of the valves wasn’t like sealing properly having a baby carrying an extra body would have had more pressure on my heart Steve was really worried about what would happen unless I had an operation it was open heart surgery and I had the valve replaced I remember the nurs is telling me that I’ve been set up talking about Steven in recovery I just remember him being really happy when he came afterwards came to see me call your T back for me we hadn’t been trying for long at all before we fell pregnant Steve was really excited so happy it was just the best feeling he was there to see her being born Steve held her first and I just remember seeing him cudl in her and it was just lovely lovely to see made me happy after going through so much it was just the best feeling knowing that I got a family in the end can you see out your left eye at all is that really painful do you mind if I tried just a little bit and you let me know if you can see out your left eye have you been able to open your a wall collapse on him he’s got a frontal skull fracture with a laceration above the left eyebrow and he can’t open that left eye we have to prize the left eye open and on the secondary survey the pupil was fixed and dilated all right thanks a lot thanks bye bye a fixed and dilated pupil can be very very serious there could be damage to the eye itself there could be damage to the muscles around around the eye and both of those things could result in a loss of sight you’ll be really well looked after me honestly we’ll be so well looked after don’t worry so try not to be too worried about anything [Music] honest I always knew he’d be a good dad and when the girls came along it was just amazing with them the girls love dressing up as princesses super es Steve has a Superman costume that he puts on and dresses up with him which the girls thing is just amazing that I dresses up the girls are everything to stepen he’d do anything for them they’re just his world it’s not exactly how you thought your D was going to pan out is it no don’t worry about anything just now though the most important thing is that you’re going to have some rest all like she’ll be absolutely exhausted [Music] when you see patients in the emergency department do you think how you might react were you in that situation it can make you feel a huge amount of empathy for that person who have got potentially life-changing in family’s everything you’ve got to remind yourself like what are you doing it all four time together as a family is so precious and we should never take that for [Music] granted Steven is being taken to a major trauma Ward to be monitored closely and for specialist to assess if the sight in his left eye can be [Music] saved right should we going have a look [Music] then I worry about daddy when he’s away at a different country because I love him and I miss him [Music] then steveen in hospital I was so scared to tell the girls daddy can’t come home tonight and it just made me feel awful cuz I knew they wouldn’t understand [Music] why hello sit down there momy I can’t remember a single thing about it all I remember is is drove to work as I normally would and then the next thing as I woke up on the ward is is left me totally blind in the left eye but I feel very lucky to have survived it gmer and the girls mean everything they’re what you get up and go to work for and
