I hate to be that guy but Altus is a 7-8 speed derailleur with a max range of 34 teeth. It might have broken from overloading it.

That sucks. Things always break when it matters. Deore is the way to go if you’re on a budget.

Swap in a new der and get back on the road!

You have horizontal dropouts, you could have that set up singlespeed in like 10 minutes with just a chain breaker if you’re actually intent on a nice long ride.
