Hi bikepackers! I bought this 2021 Marin Muirwoods this spring for a few hundred bucks with the intention of getting into bikepacking on gravel, chunky fireroads, and light single track in the PNW. Also for hitting plenty of paved trails while commuting around Seattle. I bought it without doing much research, but felt it was a good entry level hybrid for the cost.

Now that I’ve learned some more, I’m wondering what upgrades you guys would make to turn it into a nice all around ride also capable of mixed terrains or if you would get a different rig like a Hudski Doggler, Marin dsx, Surly, etc.

It’s all stock:
Frame – Series 1 Butted Cromo

29” wheels –
– 700cx40mm tires – unfortunately got a small pinch flat that appeared days after riding this trail(my first gravel). None of my parts are tubeless compatible. I’m stuck with tubes, but will soon upgrade to a beefier tire than the stock Vee Tire Speedsters, if keeping this bike.

Gearing –
– Shift lever – Shimano Altus 3×9
– Front derailleur – Shimano Altus
– Rear derailleur- Shimano Alivio Shadow 9 Speed

Brakes –
– Shimano BR-M201 Hydraulic Disk, 160mm

Working on simple upgrades now like pedals, saddle, swapping bars for surly moloko.

Just looking for advice on if it’s more economical to build up what I have or look for something slightly more higher end/complete! I do like the wide range of gears with all the hills here and think it’s a sharp looking bike. I’m also very comfortable with the upright geometry. Thanks in advance!!

It’s hard to answer this without understanding what your budget expectations are. Like, are you trying to spend the smallest possible amount or do you want to drop $3k and get something very specifically targeted?

Obviously doing small upgrades to your current rig is the cheapest option, and there’s a diminishing returns thing, but we can’t tell you what dollar amount you should want to spend.
