    Saw an old bike on the curb and decided to save it. This was attached to the handlebars. Anyone have any info on this part? It looks to be missing a piece.

      Speedometer, the round thing goes over the front axle and turns the cable to move the needle.  I had one of those a long long time ago on a 20″ bike.  Fun!

      Oh wait is the inner cable missing?  That sucks.

      I had one of those about 45 years ago (yes, I’m that old). In the last photo where you have removed the cable from the gear assembly there should be a small square rod inside that fits in the square hole on the gear. I suspect it has broken off, otherwise it looks like it is in pretty decent condition.

      I found an old eBay listing for a similar unit – it sold last November for CDN $29.

      I doubt you will be able to find a replacement cable unless you get lucky enough to locate another old unit at a flea market somewhere. The thing you need to determine is whether the head unit is still functioning as it is possible the gears inside it have bound up and that is what caused the cable to break. If you remove the cable at the head unit you should be able to get at a similar internal part and spin it to make the speed register.

      I am fairly sure I road one of these at my grandparents place back in the 90’s. Cool find.

      Lol, that’s 1950’s technology. I had similar on my 3-speed Schwinn back then. A couple of times I had the needle wavering between 45 and 50 on big steep hills in rural NJ. We didn’t need no stinkin’ helmets.
