Choosing a steel frame daily commuter

I'm looking to buy a steel frame bike for my 6 mile daily commute. I don't have a huge budget, so I'm trying to choose something decent that I can possibly make some upgrades to over time. Right now I'm considering these three options:

Brooklyn Bicycle Co. Roebling

Surly Preamble

Jamis Cods S2

Any thoughts on these would be much appreciated!
