Hello! I normally only build fixed gear bikes, but a few months back I got this old cannondale mtb from my aunt. I really love this bike and I’ve known it since my childhood. The fact that it’s mine now is quite special to me. Although I love to ride it, I’ve noticed the cranks and the overall gear situation need some modernizing because they are really old and I really hate the 3×9 that is on it right now. I’ve watched a few videos about converting older mountainbikes with new parts and I really like the look of the bikes that have 1×9/10/11/12 gears for example. Since I never work with gears and honestly don’t really like gears I don’t know where to start and how to upgrade this bike. I was wondering if you guys could help me out and give me some recommendations how you would approach it. Thanks in advance!!

Replace the crank and bb with a modern threaded bb version and 1x cranks. Plenty of cheap options from amazon. All of these are pretty much knockoffs of Shimano, but are perfectly fine to run on commuter bikes.

For the drivetrain, 1×10 from Microshift should work.

Wheel wise, you can retrue them, replace the ball bearings, replace the brak cables, and get new brake shoes.

A complete Advent X groupset can be had for very cheap and would be a great option for this
