Swapped out the old 9 speed shimano cassette and shifter to an 8 speed pairs, and I used the old chain and is now looking like this, so I just need new chain of the right length?

Some additional info: my derailleur is totally stretched out and the B – tension screw is totally suspended and is not doing anything… Is this also a sign that my chain is too short?

Well a new 8 speed chain might be wise no? Saves you cleaning that rancid motherfucker too.

An 8-speed chain is wider than a 9-speed one. This might be why the old (9-speed) chain isn’t sitting on the 8-speed cogs properly (I think it unlikely your chain has stretched that badly).
You may also need to change to a 8-speed chainwheels with an 8-speed chain…? (Can someone more knowledgeable chip in)
If you are unsure/not confident about the chain tension too, I suggest you need to take your bike in-person to someone with more expertise.
