After a gear has been shifted to, if I pull on the cable even slightly, it shifts back down to that gear. What part of the shifter lever could it be? Also some guidance on how to take it apart would be appreciated.

It could be a frayed or stretched gear cable – Try changing it.
I wouldnt recommend taking the shifter apart – Lots of intricate parts and not an easy reassembly in my experience.
