was the word and the Word was with God and the Word was God he was with God in the beginning through him all things were made without him nothing was made that has been made that’s every one of us in here in him was life and that light that life was the light of men the light shines in the darkness but the darkness has not understood it and in other translations it says that Darkness has not put it out there came a man who was sent from God his name was John he came as a witness to testify concerning that light so that through him all men might believe he himself was not the light he came only as a witness to the light the True Light that gives light to every man was coming into the world he was in the world and though the world was made through him the world did not recognize him he and only who came from the father full of grace and truth elsewhere Paul St Paul writes of the love that that the father Our Father in Heaven the perfect dad the perfect father lavished on us that we it’s lovely to be here was here was here oh really really okay right go for it I’m of a certain age that my parents used to have a particular tabloid newspaper delivered to them every day we up there right who who remembers these y y well that that puts me a month of I’m I’m still in my late 50s should we say enjoying late 50s and yeah so this introduces the theme for this evening and yeah knowing you’ll be loved until the end of time Hallelujah knowing you won’t leave her bedside okay oh I’ve got one here as well and this wonderful one hitting the road together now those of you who know Ruth and I know that that’s probably not going to happen again in the future uh but we won’t go there we won’t go there if Colin was here I’m sure that five days on from now 24 hours a day Colin would probably run out of steam and say I’ve just done a little bit on the love of God but so I’m going to try and do in 20 minutes something about the love of God but I’m going to start off with something leg John Legend and this Crazy Little Thing Called [Music] Love okay so what we say to you every day every so what we’ve got is the P Persistence of love the questioning of How Long Will I Love can somebody actually in my loneliness find me somebody to love and then oh I’ll always love you and then that declaration yes she loves me Ruth you’re giving it away here you know and we’ve got the energy of Love The Power of Love All of Me Love loves all of you and we’re beginning to get into interpersonal relationships here and then you got that wonderful one from Queen which is about how confusing love can be there Crazy Little Thing Called Love okay moving on okay why do you think we are obsessed by love songs okay they the answers up there but don’t look at the screen um because yes love songs Express something about relationship and our need our almost god um defined element which which is about relationship being important to us if we go back to the Garden of EG God creates Adam so you have that relationship well you got relationship between God and His creation and then God and His creation and Adam comes along and then you’ve got God and his relationship with creation Adam and Eve comes along so we we build up this notion that it is almost Godly defined that we are in a sense created for relationships but we know from the Garden of Eden that things don’t always work out right Adam and Eve they wanted to be like God they wanted to have that knowledge of what is good and evil and so that relationship with God got broken and God said no you can’t stay in this place and Adam and Eve were evicted at the Garden of Eden because they wanted to know the difference between good and evil right and wrong if we go into Judaism in Judaism there’s a concept which is called the which is the personification of evil we would probably describe Satan devil whatever but we see how evil comes in to relationships and how serpent in the Garden of Eden said did God really say this to you did he really say and that doubt formed the breakdown of that relationship between God Adam and Eve so from that we have the concepts of Love inter personal relationship our relationship with God but also we have the breakdown of love where hurt and harm come into play and I’m sure that there’s a lot of us at different aspects and points in Our Lives who have experienced hurt and harm in relationships so having looked at love hurt harm relationships and just going to park that there for a little moment because I’m going to do a little bit of hypotheticals um CU I like doing things like this um but I want to give you my credentials for sort of doing this because you some people might say well is that really can that really be so I surrendered my life to Christ at the age of 17 at an Eric Del mission in St Helens I’ve been in the church for 36 years now 8 years Parish life 8 years Hospital chaplain and then 15 years as a British Association of counseling and Psychotherapy NHS mental health counselor that’s a long long word for you long sentence and I’m giving you those credentials because I’m about to profer some hypotheticals which I want you to sort of stay with me about and some of these hypotheticals relate to the idea of hurt and harm and Trauma now just as an aside from that you’ll gather from the screen that yeah part of my Branch nickname is I’m Admiral sensible thank you Kev um although Kev decided on a different nickname but we’ll stick with the Admiral sensible now I do believe in all the gear all the time so you’ll see that at atg at and the reason why and this was something that traumatized me at the time was I took my test at the age of 24 in the new witness test center out leading out onto the bridge and we were all asked to stay for until 1:00 so there’s 12 of those there and then these two police bikers Rock up and they pull out some photograph albums well needless to say a couple of the folk in Shell suits and trainers went off and wretched on the nearby grass Verge um so they weren’t very nice um sort of photograph albums but it traumatized me it traumatized me to the point where it made a difference it made that difference that I believe in all the gear all the time so what I want to do now is just describe a hypothetical scenario it has no factual relationship to anyone and some of the details are purposely going to be completely inaccurate so my Advanced apologies if this is a little bit too close for anybody I’m sorry and if it does touch some sensitivities if you’re listening here or if you’re listening online in the future seek help if it does touch some sensitivities so the essence of bikers church is that we are bikers we are Christians and bikers and as bikers we are fully aware of the risks that beset us none of us thinks that we it’s going to ever happen to us but when we get on those two wheels we are aware of the potential that could happen so the hypothetical I want to give to you long Country Lane 50 Zone obviously it’s not Wales because it’s a 50 Zone um and there aren’t any snails crawling along the road overtaking us um and in the far distance there’s this little road coming off and we say I know for the purposes of this evening I’m just going to say a red Vox all just coming out to the edge of the road now those of us who might have done might not have done speed a word as courses um you will know from the training that people aren’t looking for vehicles they are looking for spaces they’re not looking for other people on the road they’re looking for a space that they can jump out into so this bikers going for it sees the red fox all come to a halt thinks fine carries on 20 M away from the junction Fox all decides no I’m going to go for it yeah we we all know what happened don’t we because it’s that typical smidsy sorry mate I didn’t see you there the person was looking for a space they just went for it so unfortunately the biker um yeah biker break but wasn’t time enough to stop themselves and sadly went over the Bonnet and rolled over a few times down the road in all probability there’s probably going to be some injuries a little bit of gravel rash possibly I know broken arm broken collar bone those type of things and in that moment as the biker comes around they knew they’ve been robbed of their physical well-being because oh it hurt it hurts and those have I do see a few nods in here so this is probably touched home a little bit but the car had disappeared car had gone it done a runner they know they’ve been robbed of their physical well-being they know they”re been robbed of their no claims discount they know they’ve been robbed of their functionality of their bike their jackets torn their helmets cracked but hey I’m still alive so still on the road surface wondering about their well-being they hear the distant sounds of Emergency Services an ambulance whizzes past them they’re thinking hey mate sorry um well can’t raise arms but I’m here and I’m not going to do an impersonation of a fire engine or a police car you get the idea but they pass and go and they leave the biker thinking am I invisible what’s just happened here and they’re getting really angry so then the next person to rock up is a cyclist the cyclist duie Parks the bike next to the curb with the left left pedal on the curb side so yeah I’ve been cyclist in the past they come over and they have a look oh mate that looks bad that looks really bad yeah I’m not really sure I’m equipped for this I’m I’m a I’m a work’s first AER mate but this is just too much for me um so I what um look oh flck the kill switch on your um look I’ll fck the kill switch on your bike and here’s your keys but I’m sorry I’m just going to have to leave you just someone else I’ll deal with you so then white fan man stops oh gosh we had a few Chuckles and about white van man so yeah and obviously for most bikers white van man has a purpose and they don’t want you to get in the way of their purpose so there’s a sense a little bit of enity between bikers and white van men anyway this white van man driver gets that oh mate we need to get it sorted don’t we so he checks him over makes sure that yeah okay it’s probably a broken arm so bit puts a sling in out of his first a kit from in the van gets him into the van trundles the bik on to the pavement locks it up and white van man then takes s biker off to A&E A&E deal with him and biker recovers what I’ve just told you is a story of the Good Samaritan but I don’t want to stop there the Jesus focuses on the concept in the Good Samaritan about the Samaritan and what he does for the person who’s been robbed and beaten and these two people really have no reason to like each other whatsoever but the Good Samaritan puts him on his donkey takes him to an end asks the inkeeper to look after him make sure he gets him well but I don’t want to look at the Good Samaritan because this Good Samaritan has been spoken about a lot of time what I want to talk about is the victim because we don’t hear anything more about what happens to the victim in the Good Samaritan person was robbed people walked by indifferent didn’t bother until one person picked up and ensured that they were looked after yes the Good Samaritan probably felt quite smug that he’d done the right thing at the end of the day we don’t know we’re not told that but if I I go to my paraphrase of the story yes the biker has been robbed of their bike in a sense they’ve been robbed at their physical well-being through their injuries their ability to work and function normally because of their convalescence and then because the other driver had done a runner they’ve had to claim on the no claims discount of 17 years so that’s their premium is going to be going up Sky High and as they eventually get back on the bike there’s that sort of shakiness about getting back on the bike for the first time and there’s that over cautiousness about oh right okay perhaps it’s better to do 15 miles an hour on this 50 stretch just in case and it almost gets to the point of a little bit of paranoia what they didn’t account for was the long-term impact that drama has on the human psych how we have the potential to retain hurt and harm so as they’re riding along every time they see something might be an avert on the road sign which says buy your new Vox all Vox all they see a red car they hear a siren where is he where is he where is he where is he and even the poor cyclist that pulls up at the side of the they just want to Bunch their Living Daylights out of this person because they’re a cyclist and then when they finally get into work in the toilets it says your workplace first AER is so they get to a point where it’s almost rageful there are what kind what’s happened is bik has been hurt yes their physical ailments and their injuries May well have been healed and um their bones fixed mended braces fixators casts we can do things like that with bones but they’ve been traumatized by their past experience what is happening in the present moment is they are still reacting not responding reacting something very instinctual about it they’re reacting to unresolved triggers their interpersonal relationship with other people in the world has been damaged by another person’s poor judgment or laps in concentration and what I want to say is that at an interpersonal relationship level it’s likely that we have all been hurt and damaged by the words actions or inactions the emissions of others and the loving trust that we should have for our fellow Brethren around us has been marred because yes we are suspicious every time that red Vox all oh if we see a red Vox all red light rage full-blown own rage and we are untrusting of others so what does the bible tell us about forgiveness Peter’s always the one who seems to ask the awkward questions isn’t he and he always gets the really challenging answers from Jesus very often in triplet as well so Peter challenges Jesus how many how many times must I forgive my brother if they hurt me it’s up to seven times thinking well seven times that’s pretty good going mate and Jesus says no no Peter no up to 70 time 7 Peter had been brought up with elements of the levitical law which said it’s Leviticus 24: 19-21 in as much as a person was injured they had the right to injure the person back it’s pretty gross isn’t it the concept of restitutional theology but what Jesus was advocating is forgiveness and love beyond the rigidity of Old Testament law that actually we are going somewhere beyond that in terms of our interpersonal relationships not just with ourselves and others but with God as well what it points out though as well is that in as much as each and every one of us have been harmed or hurt by others we have all potentially been involved in hurting and harming others if we go to John’s first epistle if we say we have no sin the truth isn’t in us but if we confess our sins God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from every kind of wrong we have all sinned we have all fallen short of the glory of God now I’m sure you’ll have heard the phrase the flippant phrase oh forgive and forget well yes we can forgive and we’re called to forgive but we don’t have a file delete option in our brains the notion of what has happened to us remains part of our chronological history oh that we could have a file delete option but then we’d be thinking what’s in that space I’m sure there was probably something a bit dodgy in that space But I can’t remember it it would be lovely to be able to forget but we can’t so if you find yourself struggling with those type of memories research done in counseling Realms said that potentially 75% of us will recover from trauma without the help and support of others we will res solve it in our own way in our own time and get through it but some of us might need extra help in doing that and that’s where if you need help ask and seek for help and don’t just leave it to the last moment because when I worked in the NHS the waiting lists eventually went from 6 weeks to 51 weeks so if you feel you are struggling and you need help and support go and ask and seek help also oops I’ll just discreetly reconnect this microphone you got this organization here and these wonderful badges here um mental health might bank I’m going to say yes if you can join you’ll find support there um but they are a signed posting service they’re there to try and help people who are struggling also there’s lots of other Charities out there that are focused on trying to help people who are struggling with psychological issues if it’s stuff in your childhood National Association for people abused in childhood napac they do a lot of good work and they’re accessible for people there’s all sorts of stuff in terms of help perhaps two of the most significant would be trauma Focus CBT or IM movement desensitization regime in terms of trauma Focus therapy but go and seek for help but what I want to also say is that hurt might not just be inter personal hurt might be an organization that has damaged or hurt you so there’s a little bit harder the popular one at the moment is the Royal Male Scandal and we will have if you’ve seen the the um the series about the Royal Male Scandal and how people have been hurt by an organization we are called to for for give and be forgiven if we are to love God with all our heart with all our soul with all our mind and with all our strength and love our neighbors as ourselves and that’s what these little bits are down the side here o Israel the Lord your God is one you should love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul with all your mind with all your strength strength is about how we access support from each other and love your neighbor as yourself if we are going to offer that level of love then not only do we have to realize our responsibilities to forgive but to also acknowledge our need to be forgiven when we look at the Grim scene of the crucifixion we see Jesus being nailed to a cross hand and feet and what are the words that Jesus says father forgive them for they know not what they do and the criminal at the side who’s been crucified with him there’s two Jesus turns to the one and says today you will be with me in Paradise if you’ve been hurt or are mortified by the hurt that you’ve made done to others then Jesus offers you forgiveness he offers you the ability to have a new life a new life from this moment and going forward into the future a new life with him knowing that you are forgiven and yes it is really hard at times to think that perpetrators of hurt and harm can also seek God in Repentance and be forgiven but we are called to love not to love conditionally the ones who we think are worthy of being loved but we are called to love with unconditional love if you already know this love and know this forgiveness but there’s an obstacle in a relationship then scripture tells us go confront that person if they still have a problem then get two witnesses and go back and confront them again scripture tells us to be congruent to try and make good to try and bring about forgiveness and seek a resolution that’s in Matthew 18 we are called to love unconditionally despite our differences we are all part of one body and yeah sometimes we make such a big issue over the little stuff that it gets in the way of that call by Jesus to love unconditionally so if you don’t already know this loving forgiveness in your life and want at this moment to reach out for the love of God in your life and the ability to know forgiveness and to be able to offer forgiveness and I ask you pray the words of this prayer with me and once you’ve prayed it to seek out somebody from church someone at work who you know to be a Christian someone who wears a white cross on the back of their cats or somebody who wears tribe of Judah or long riders or God squad or many of the other Christian different biker organizations to reach out to them and say I’ve prayed this prayer I want to go for with Christ so As We Gather here and those of you online just want you to read through this prayer with me this evening dear Lord Jesus I realize I’m a sinner I’ve hurt you and hurt others by my words actions and inactions I ask for your forgiveness I believe you died for my sins and rose from the dead I turned from my my sins and surrender my will to you by your Holy Spirit be present in my heart and life I want to love and trust you as my Lord and Savior amen reading from Matthew’s gospel chapter 22 this is from the Baptist Church version the Contemporary one of the teachers of the law of Moses came up while Jesus and the sades for arguing and when he heard Jesus give a good answer he asked him what is the most important commandment Jesus answered the most important one says people of Israel you have only one Lord and God you must love him with all your heart soul mind and strength the second most important commandment says love others as much as you love yourself no other commandment is more important than these and the man replied teacher you’re certainly right to say there is only one God it is also true that we must love God with all our heart mind and strength and that we must love others as much as we love ourselves these Commandments are more important than all the sacrifices and offerings that we could possibly make when Jesus saw that the man had given a sensible answer he told him you are not far from God’s kingdom after this no one dared Jesus any more questions thank you John thank you Chris can I don’t know this microphone y um I have a person who was also um taken aside and talked to by somebody when I was a new biker when I was 16 17 years of age long time ago now 50 years and I was filling up with petrol and the person um who was looking after The Filling Station um waited until I went with my money and um in those days I was I had a little C d7500 and um I used to to ride that in all sorts of peculiar clothes and we’re talking about the 1970s um I had a pair of lilac metallic lilac boots that came up to my knees and I used to wear them with shorts on my bike and ride from where I lived down to taon to college and he didn’t want me to do that anymore so he took me aside into his office and he told me about the loss of his son who had died because he wasn’t adequately clothed and I will always be grateful all the gear all the time I adopt that myself I would love it if everyone else did but we’re creatures with free choice in every area of life and within 5 years ago I was exceedingly glad on the m6 to have had all the gear on all the time when I had a crash so no broken bones no real injuries except bruising and Trauma Chris thank you very much for your word and uh Lord I pray you bless us all that you
