I just had an interesting idea while trespassing exploring a closed path near my house.
When I was a kid it was the unofficial ATV trail and a hangout spot, but I think it got blocked off because of complaints.
I wasnt sure about the condition of the path after so many years. It was my first time exploring it. I just remembered it existed and wanted to explore it for the first time.
I'm so happy I went! It was a brand new experience for me and fun practice for my future first trip. This simple adventure gave me a childlike sense of wonder that I haven't experienced in years. I don't own a gravel bike yet and normally spend all of my time on roads.
It was a beautiful hidden side of my neighborhood that I had never seen before. And I felt a bit safer because I wasn't on a road. There is only one major cycling path here. It's sad that this natural path is not open to the public anymore.
On to the actual topic of the post, I came close to the end of the path and wasn't sure I could continue to the actual end. It got more rough and overgrown by this point, as shown in the picture.
Then I had what I thought was a great idea:
What if I could travel with the smallest drone I could find that I can use to scout ahead on foreign routes that I wasn't sure I could handle?
Has anyone else thought of this? Are drones small enough these days to carry comfortably on a long bike packing trip? Or is it not worth the trouble? Yes I'm sure they're expensive.

100% not worth it. With the space it will take up and the difficulty of charging it and/or lugging around the battery for recharging it, you’ll come to hate the thing long before it proves useful. And frankly, the only paths worth cycling for any significant distance are well established so that you can and should plan the route in advance. You won’t be able to just cobble together a significant route on the fly with a drone.
A lot of bicycle touring YouTubers bring a drone. My favorite, a surly old dude on a surly, Paul Suchecki has one and gets some killer shots for his channel.
