I’ve been riding a cult control for over a year now and all I felt needed improving was the tyres. I’m still only doing tame stuff as I’m middle aged (e.g., 3 stair jump). Is custom stuff just stronger or does it feel better? Does it weigh less?

Stronger, lighter. That’s your lot, other than it’s a bike you’ve selected and built and there won’t be another exactly like it.
Custom stuff or a more pricey bike just over all have better quality, lighter parts and can take more of a beating but it really depends on your preference or skill level
If you have to disassemble your bike a lot for transport, the bolts and threads on higher end components hold up a bit better.
There are a lot of niche benefits that don’t really affect actually riding the bike.
And also aesthetics. You can pick some sweet lookin parts out
Lightweight and durable (unless you get Ti parts)
Strong, light, cheap. You can only ever pick 2…
Lighter wallet will allow you to catch more air.
Usually the lighter it is the more expensive it is. It’s weight.
To give an example, the first BMX bike I bought was a mid range complete. After a while I forked over a few hundred for some new wheels. I was scared at first that I spent all that money and I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two wheels, but that went away quickly after the first ride. The profile minis I’m riding now feel so much smoother, it’s hard to describe what it feels like but after riding the old wheel again while the new was getting repaired a while ago it cemented that it felt more sluggish like there was more rolling resistance.
Stronger lighter last longer just better in general
Most important custom geometry and riding style. I need higher bars for my back, less fork offset for easier nose control stuff, 160mm cranks for better spins, streety frame for easier spins and easier manuals.
You build a bike for your own needs and style, at the end of the day you go full custom with each part.
