[Music] I didn’t know the beach was clothing optional this week we’re in eastborn and our five designers are hoping to reach New Heights as they reinvigorate five beach shallal somewhere down there we just stopped oh no I don’t like this help get help I’m stuck up here it’s Alan car from the Telly welcome to Interior Design Masters I’m not joking get me down 10 aspiring designers competing for one life-changing contract to transform a top cocktail bar last time so beautiful around here I know the designers hit the High Street that one should go here despite their differences I can’t stand it Tom and tamy pulled it out the bag this is one coherent design you know what no confidence left Monica missed the mark it just doesn’t go with anything in the store and it to me it seems a shame but it was Ry I can’t think to get rid of the ho who failed to put his best foot forward it’s all about the product so I think for that reason Roy if you’re going home going to be amazing thank you [Music] we’re over halfway through the competition and just five designers remain hi guys hello hello hey guys hey hey I can’t believe I made it to week five not in my wildest dreams I thought that I will get this far I’m excited for the new challenge good what do you think it will be I’m hoping for something a bit smaller it would be nice something a bit more intimate I like big I small scares me I am feeling wonderful I have earned my spot here had another little dip but I’m doing something right so just got to hang in there Jack it was your first time on the sofa last week I know and I want to I want to keep it that way being on the sofa yeah I had my confidence knocked a bit last week hi guys hi sorry I’m late I was at a man from Delonte audition ironically they said no why you wearing black what’s up we’re in morning for Ry oh who shocked that Ryan went he’s so good so good unbelievably shocked really shocked really shocked yes and now Charlotte’s Gone ry’s Gone Tom you’re the last of the redheads you need to keep going you can do this the ginger I’ll do it for hello hello everyone oh gosh and then they were fine seems so small I know speaking of which last week we went large on shops this week we have the opposite challenge small spaces in need of some big Ideas because I am sending you to eastborn the seaside town where you will be making over five Beach chalets o eastborne often named the sunniest place in the UK and home to these elegant 1930s brickbuilt Chalet on the western end of the prominade working solo each designer must transform these compact spaces into multi-functional Seaside Retreats with areas to eat socialize and relax but these are no ordinary Beach Hearts okay these were purpose built in the 1930s but they do need a little bit of love and attention now to bring them back to their former glory also each one is individually tenanted so each of you will have a different brief but typically in a small space storage is key so I’m really looking for that marriage of practicality with the personal and helping me judge this week is interior design royalty the one and only Lawrence lell en a big personality in a small space there we go and at the end of The Challenge as you all know the week’s designers will be on the sofa and sadly one of you will be leaving the competition good luck thank you thank you o small spaces Beach yeah I’m vibing it so when I think about Beach chies I kind of think of just an endless row of colorful doors and now that I think about it I hope that I can paint the door black I really want to do that eastn love eastborn it’s all new to me another new town for another new town for me we don’t have many Beach Huts in Belfast or Northern Ireland so I’m kind of thinking like garden shed at the minute and by the SS of things they’re as small as that but I hope they’re a bit sturdier Beach Chalet get over yourself Michelle it’s Beach Hearts why are they Chalet no that is actually what they called they were built by the council in the 1930s so these are like they brick little houses theyve got little terror they’re really permanent fixtures they’re gorgeous oh that’s nice do you want them to sort of be inspired by the scenery down there cuz you got those chalk Cliffs you got that gorgeous Beach how much of that are you hoping for them to put into their design I think location is everything so to kind of turn your back on it I think would be a bit of Madness and these are small spaces aren’t they if it’s going to be a place to eat drinks socialize and sunbath that’s a lot of storage where are they going to put it all well there in lies the challenge I mean these spaces have got to work really hard but I really don’t want to see them full of like tricks and Gadget tricks you want to sort of Go Back to Basics but you want a sort of hint of luxury don’t you that’s it absolutely so let’s go to the seaside I can’t wait I’ve got me Budgy Smugglers and me chip fat bring it on oh it’s gorgeous so englishy S I love it situated right on East BN Beach are five Chalets in need of a revamp wo this is cute but it’s so tiny each measuring just under 2.5 M squared how am I supposed to fit 8 people in here they are the smallest space our designers have faced this is the most full my van has been the whole time it’s like choc block working in cramped conditions and a heat wave yeah yeah okay and with a budget of £1,000 this is going this is going this is going this is staying it’s King George in East bne they have just two days to transform their Chalet both inside and out I’m going to do a covered canopy out in the communal Terrace I actually just worry I’m going to be able to fit everything in and as always they’ve each been assigned a talented team of Trades people morning Monica hi hi hi to turn their Concepts into reality are you ready to get started on this huge space your humble abod my humble abod by the seaside so Tom this shelf is bolted on Oh yay Tom’s client is a water sports Enthusiast with a lot of Kit to store it’s such a small space um I’m building a banket seating and I’m putting a big wall of storage um with wardrobe space for sports equipment it needs to pack away or like a little Russian doll at the end of the day come on Tom you’ve got this as well as practical Storage Solutions the client also wants a particular style my brief this week is to do a Caribbean Beach H for me the Caribbean is very bright colors beautiful and hot and I’m not of those things I’m awesome and I’m warm and cozy so I’m really nervous about this one wa bit of poly filler there and it’ll be fine so my brief is to transform this space into a gin club for eight people wow I know wow yeah everything is going including the sink new floor gold ceiling let’s do this then awesome Monica’s Chalet is shared by four couples who’d like art deco decor for their gin sampling Hub I got lucky with the brief that I got I can go wild with my love for gold with some patterns and I also am a big lover of Jin so that helps she may be a lover of Golden Gin but there’s one thing Monica doesn’t like I hate beaches I’m sweating I’m too hot I think subconsciously I have created a design for a beach Alle that has nothing to do with a beach so I’m going for a gin club that just happens to be by the sea I know it is a bit of a gamble but in the same time I know for a fact Michelle hates cliches at least that’s what I’m thinking I love a bit of the Sun so actually I’m just going to move out here make the most of it after being on the three times already Peter’s got a lot to prove this week my space is for a multigenerational family that all use it and come together and socialize so it has to accommodate loads of people but equally they want it to be a Party Hub so I got to give them a bit of fun Peter’s client has requested flamboyant florals and vibrant colors outside will be painted teal and the inside a warm Peach modified camping tables will store away in in Sleek side cupboards upholstered bench seats will provide storage underneath and a big Botanical mural will create a focal point so these are some like bench seating I got from a charity shop in my brief it says that the family really would like some comfy seating although I will admit early on I’m looking at it thinking two of these might be a bit much um but I will see how the space works it’s definitely a new challenge this week because in other weeks I’ve struggled to fill the space whereas this time we I just need to stand in the space and I filled it so it’s a whole new set of challenges I’m sewing the cushion cover for my bench seat after being part of the winning team with Tom last week oh what’s happened to my needle tamy plans to stay on top with her design for an ecos shell the client’s really hard working they’re GP they volunteer they do stuff for the Samaritans and she’s really eco-conscious and this is sort of their escape so I just hope that it does feel like escapism for them Tam is using beachy tones of blue and green and will create a horizon line inside the shell to emulate the sea she’s got lots of natural materials including a livewood kitchenet with pullout table a bench seat with storage and a cargo net which will hang from the ceiling outside a tiled porch and hammock will complete the look look Eco Chalet wasn’t the brief I wanted because in hotels week I had gone for quite a natural organic Vibe um and I’m worried about being too syy and Michelle saying she’s seen it before so I am a little bit worried about that how pretty is she that is Lovely Isn’t She Lovely yeah like Monica Jack’s also going for Art Deco this week I do love a ceiling rows yeah I just think that they are just magnific they just add a little bit of extra something to the space like an immediate focal point the Chalet is rented by East born’s A&E department for their staff to share it’s funded for them to come and bring their families sometimes they have like work functions here it needs to be a multi-functional space where everything can fold away quite cleverly Jack ceiling rows will be the center of a mural featuring eight diving ladies shallow paneled cabinet will provide storage I side and a kitchen worktop made from reclaimed floorboards will fit around the existing sink NHS colors of blue and white with pops of orange will bring the whole scheme together these are my diving girls so I’ve drawn them on this bit and I’m going to cut them out and then I’m going to paint them and they’re going to be my art deco diving girls on the ceiling Jack’s hoping his opulent and ambitious scheme will keep him off the so for this week I think it’s the biggest I could have gone in a small space like this I mean it’s it kind of is like go big or go home and I’m happy to just go big this week and hopefully not go home but it’s you know let’s just hope it pays [Music] off I am a big fan of reusing and repurposing for Monica gin Club she’s drawing on her up cycling expertise to transform this vintage sideboard so the whole unit is going to be basically the new kitchen and sink area so this is where the Hub is going to go you’ll have a small well a still good size area to prep your food and then here ideally I want to cut a hole to put the sink in and then inside of this cupboard hopefully is where all the PIP work is going to go I Monica’s the only designer this week to rip out the original sink hey Phil so I am trying to visualize this okay and I know that this looks like a tight fit potentially the sink can fit in the cupboard so if we move this it won’t it won’t be sitting on the runner on the on that Runner block let’s let’s cut the hole in the top first and then see what we got to work with the cybo with the sink is my main worry I feel like everything else I can tweak if this sink unit won’t work then I might as well pack my [Music] bags talk about sink or swim oh all me arms the name’s car Alan car I think I can see dry land time to spy on some shallal ow the shingle gets everywhere [Music] right where’s those designers ow kiss the life wouldn’t have gone a [Music] miss so I’m just um spraying some mirrors to give them a copper effect so it’s going to be mirrored backsplash but about the cost of a copper mirror [Music] backsplash can’t actually hear myself through that what are you doing making some copper mirrors Alan oh I’ll be blunt why I wanted a distressed sort of copper look yeah and my client said she liked repurposing and things like that so tell us you breathe again it’s Eco isn’t it yes so it’s Eco Chalet um I’ve got a multifunctional table um that’s made out of live wood um I’ve got a cargo net I’m made with my own hands Alan oh my God look at those hands swollen oh oh look at that oh all the callous Fisherman’s hand and my rope is made of hemp which means it’s degradable um things like that yeah yeah clever so can I help you with one of these you can Alan oh right so I’ll get you to hold the front yeah and I’ll just pop that over your head like so now I can’t see anything love oh is that lovely that’s that’s safety thank you that’s great now put me gr is done right you’re all shaking up shake as you spray Shake as your shake as your spray is that nice I mean it will do I feel bad now we’re going to say goodbye to yeah I would as well love right Steve morning along the beach because there is up to eight people dining in the space I’m modifying camping tables Peter’s got a compact design plan for his client’s big family we’re giving them new tops sort of like wooden and like a lot prettier looking like a new shell a new shell on the top of yeah and then it’ll open out and we have a dining table that can do eight people and two benches that can do eight people but it’ll all pack away in just four tidy Little Boxes cool this is living my like I’m living my I’m a builder fantasy with a nail gun I’ve always wanted to have one oh it’s so satisfying to transform his shallal into a Caribbean Shack Tom’s giving the outside a splash of color and inside some texture so I am adding um cladding to this interior space to make it look like a wooden Shack um this style is called shiplap it’s from America um it’s the way they build their houses and they always use it in this vertical horizontal horizontal way in my mind a shack is like you know where baby learns to dance in uh Dirty Dancing and it’s that white and it’s a bit sort of like wooden and it’s all been whitewashed that has that feel that’s what yeah that’s what I’m trying to make baby’s Jack it’s halfway through day one look good wow like a GL like a GL you see NHS you really don’t want to mess this up do you imagine if one of those divers actually fell off and hit one of them on the head and they ended up back in hospital the big hole no big H oh lovely yeah she works yeah where didd you get the inspiration for this oh God I don’t know um um just I was inspired one day your beard was [Laughter] it my divers I’m really happy with them I’m just giving them a light sand and then I’m going to stencil the design on and then start painting them the idea behind the divers all kind of doing it synchronized is teamwork and unity so the NHS they work hard and they work hard together and yeah when they’re done they can go up on the ceiling not only are they a deserving client but there’s a bigger reason why Jack wants to get his Design Spot on I’ve got like a larger potentially relationship with the NHS because I’ve got a condition called cystic fibrosis cystic fibrosis is a lung condition um so generally when people get a cold they can like knock it off but with Cy fibrosis it kind of lingers and festers and becomes like a chest infection it gets nasty really quickly I go in and out of Hospital quite a lot they have uh you know saved my life several times and um I’m very appreciative of that so having this to do for them is definitely like a really wonderful gift to give them and for them to enjoy so yeah it’s like extra pressure cuz I want to finish and I want it to be absolutely banging in Tam M Chalet her painter is making progress with the horizon line while outside she’s working on a practical design solution this is the Privacy scream and this beauty here was £150 from my local car boot um a bit damaged but she’s going to get a new lease of life um and then she’s going to be something really beautiful that the client can use when they want to get changed and even though it’s Eco I wanted it to feel sort of a bit highend to pursue her dream of becoming an interior designer tamy left her previous job as a lawyer I definitely did not think I would make it this far this process has been quite difficult for me because I felt you know very much like an underdog and you know I don’t have practical design experience like um some of the others in the competition um and I think it surprised me how much that would affect my confidence so yeah I need to be like no you can do this girl so I’ve sketched out my mural and I’m ready to paint and I’ve got my trusty paintbrush it’s actually a makeup brush uh but the bristles the way they move um they’re really dense and like coverage is good vibrant color is a departure from Peter’s preferred neutral palette I am not doing white in a space that white would looks so beautiful but I want Michelle to walk in there and be wow I want Lawrence to love the vibrancy because that is him but yeah at the end of the day I just do not want to be on that sofa next door this is yeah Tom’s special Martini mixture Tom’s finished cladding and is now trying to make it look weathered so I’ve got cold tea um and then I’ve got some wire wool in some vinegar and you might have put the tea on first and then put the were wool vinegar mixture on but I’ve just mixed them together it’s the same TI and then if you paint it on wood raw wood in the magic of science it changes color depending on the tannins in the wood um and different Woods change to different colors but it can make new wood look like Driftwood I’ve done like some gray already here and then I’ve just been painting it over in white and I think I’m going to do it so you can just see a little bit of gray peeping through maybe just a tiny bit not sure yet it’s still a process yeah hi Monica oh hey Alan look at you going all Art Deco well this entire sideboard is based basically a sink and a kitchen unit yeah that thing is actually a camper van sink that I built into the C that’s amazing I didn’t even see this here this is ingenious I love this yay thank you I’m so happy you like it I am fully embracing the Gin Club Vibe but the thing is I know it’s a beach shall yeah I’m not really going beachy I’m not a summer person I am a Autumn winter person do Goofs enjoy the seaside can you even get black lipos no no and look at me how cheerful I am I know I’ve never seen you in pink before a cute little strawberry I know I had to because I thought if I wear my casual normal black T-shirt I’m going to boil and die here and you know I would like to finish the shall Monica doesn’t like the beach and that’s fine but not including any reference to the seaside in her Chalet design is that a bit of a risk day one draws to a clo it’s going in yes it is I think she’s beautiful and the designer’s Visions are coming to life this is cozy you would want to sit here drink some Gin wouldn’t you I prefer the pine okay tomorrow’s biggest job is first time ever tiling just got to be honest I am not looking forward to this but while some are pleased with their progress the space is kind of looking exactly how I wanted it too so yeah I’m like calm tonight others are playing ketchup painting it does take longer than what you would think are you not supposed to stay within the lines including Jack who spent all day on his elaborate ceiling design tomorrow I’ve got to be super on it it need to be like clockwork tomorrow how are you guys feeling it’s so hot this is going to be a killer day hotot hot it’s the final day of the challenge in Sunny eastborn you feeling ready for the second day absolutely there’s a fair bit that st’s doing in just 12 hours the designers will face the judges so we need to get all the woodwork finish please inside and out and then crack on with the piece of resistance of my designer table table under yeah please low to do I’ll give you a list I like a list yours is bigger than [Laughter] mine Peter Ola Alan Ola Ola what’s are you are you in a holiday mood yeah are you not feeling it I know it’s lovely here so nice but it’s roasting here I know it’s so hot and I’m getting those W’s you know you know you get your PEC yeah PEC thanks for saying PEC babes so tell us about this mural my brief is flamboyant florals vibrant colors and the place where the it feels like the part’s always happening so well hey this is really out yet comfort zone isn’t it peage yeah it’s tough trying to stay in that kind of gender neutral palette because it’s being used by the whole family there are there are men and not just women and I already have to do florals which are considered feminine so it’s a bit of a challenge to how would you B choa floral this is how you butch up a floral this is you being butch yeah I’m trying to lean towards Peach yeah this is too much this is like if Jason Sten was a chalet I mean I think it’s too much Peter is a minimalist and color really isn’t his thing he wants his Chalet to have Universal appeal I wonder whether that peachy color and those florals might be a bit too [Music] feminine next door Tom’s also out of his color comfort zone oh my gosh is it right yeah it’s extreme pink ooh she’s vibrant she is have you ever been to the Caribbean I have not been to the Caribbean but do you think this is giving you Caribbean [Laughter] Vibes NOP no everybody’s got an opinion and that’s fine there is only one opinion that really counts and that’s Michelle’s they wanted colorful that was the brief so I’m giving them color no no that’s if that’s the brief that’s fine I am trying to make basically a deep frame a box that’s going to go around this Frame and then when I apply hinges this will become a front door to a small cupboard okay honestly the heat is getting to me I feel like I’m slow cuz I’m just overheated and there’s just still the tiling left and I’m really dreading it so I I can feel that I’m just so stressed but in the same time I should do it ASAP just in case it goes bad yes yeah that’s Bob on yeah that’s great okay with the eight divers finally prepped and painted Jack’s statement ceiling is taking shape The Decorator is just currently Fanning my ceiling rows like sun rays coming off the middle of the ceiling rows and then coming down the wall and we’re Fanning it because it will just draw the eye right up to the ceiling and it’s also helping us to create height I think from being on the sofa last week it’s taught me to like just look for the little details because Michelle obviously looks at the details so yeah I’m just trying to get everything just so for her yeah for even more detail he’s adding paneling something he’s done in every challenge so far he’s got Square panels on his side cabinets and vertical on his kitchen unit I think paneling is a good choice for a beach hut it I mean most Beach Huts sort of have like a paneled effect I mean most of them made out of wood so to me it sort of came to me like I think I should panel in Tam is shalet amazing with her horizon line painted she can now attach her copper tiles so I was going to do a mirror backsplash but um I’ve kept the original tiles because the lady in my brief um is pretty obsessed with the original sink and I realized that the tiles are probably the original tiles as well um so I decided to create a copper mirror effect um in the changing area so it just creates a mirror behind the screen 1 2 3 4 it’s halfway through day two I mean surely Lawrence is going to love this right I need to hide from the Sun as much as possible so I just thought I’m going to put up a shade tempted to leave it light I’m wood staining the top of the wood first one done wow obviously it works like so that’s beautiful it’s super effective love [Music] it in Monica’s gin Club she can’t put off her dreaded tiling job any longer okay I’m just going to go I’m just going to go with it I’m not going to talk anymore I’m just going to do it and cuz she’s avoiding Beach cliches what’s going on she’s gone for glitzy gold tiles I think that is it I think that is tiling if that is tiling that is not as scary as I thought in Peter’s family bat hole it’s the moment of truth to see if the bench seat fits so the family have these large Edwardian deck chairs they want to store so uh that’s why there’s like this uh plinth and underneath they family will be able to store them so that they’re out of the way and they’re not encroaching on the floor space I didn’t want these chairs to be really high my feet are dangling but that’s okay but as it’s as long as people don’t have to like uncomfortably climb up onto these seats that’s the goal the seating is not perfect I wish it was a fraction shorter but I brought in these pre-made benches that were super cost effective and they’re super comfy so it all worked out okay with every inch of shall space precious Storage Solutions are essential oh she’s everything I ever dreamed of Tam is creating a pullout table that will also store Crockery I need to get them as many shelves as I can in here okay Jack’s adding shelving storage is definitely something that’s had to be key in this design Point that’s just having a beautiful design if it’s not practical and Tom’s constructing a frame with hooks so I’ve got loads of exterior Furniture so I’ve put in this so we can store the deck chairs nice and tidily off the floor what’s the crack Jack hi that is fantastic do you like it so nice it’s like a pattern but it’s people and yeah it’s beautiful thank you what’s this for just paneling for a bit of Vavoom then it’s also got um storage on the inside for deck chairs it’s like the most minimal storage ever wow that is amazing really genius I wish i’ thought that I’m amazed that he’s going to be able to fit things behind there but surely he’s measured before he started cutting and hammering so I hope it works for him but then again I hope it doesn’t the end of the challenge is fast approaching too much fine paint workor for two days and it’s the final push for our designers we take a lean I think about right yeah yeah but while most of them are flat out you remember that show blog Busters kids today Tom’s almost finished oh I’m poke Tom can I sit down I have a seat love oh what’s that outside is it a canopy yeah Oh I thought there’d been a murder murder of good taste clearly no no no it’s lovely and I just think shade is a beautiful thing you can sit here you can sit out there you can sit on your Terrace I’ve made free spaces okay you don’t seem stressed it’s almost like you’ve inhabited the Caribbean you know when you go to the Caribbean and it’s dead yeah lay back take it easy we get it done we’ll get it done yeah oh a it lovely outside the designers are dressing the front of their Chalet Stephen could you just tell me if that’s the right Height please no I think that’s probably about well it’s about right for my height but Monica has realized she’s made a big mistake turns out that I have misunderstood a part of a brief there’s a whole additional space in front of the Chalet that I can also style I only prepared enough to design and style up until the porch I am worried because it’s not as impactful and like there’s no wow factor when you see it from far away a last minute attempt to hit the brief she’s found a solution okay I have decided to bring the table and chairs outside I am a little bit worried now that bringing the table outside will make the inside look a little bit empty so yeah I don’t know 12 minutes left Steve how you doing with the clock ticking I need to put the hob back dress the kitchen space a lot of things to do still it’s a race to the Finish Line I don’t do the unwrapping you do the placing thank [Music] you a it’s perfect yeah thank you yes here please mhm done I’m glad that’s over thank you appreciate it it’s judgment time for the designer chalets so are you a beach person Lawrence well you can play you see I’m wearing my bathing suits once visited by King George the fif in 19 35 and now by interior design royalty Lawrence luell and boen so Laurence here we are in East spawn to look at some 1930s Beach Chalet not Beach Huts Beach Chalet it’s a funny concept this idea of having what’s basically a shed by the beach in which you don’t actually live but you come to have fun which is love so there should be an enormous amount of Joy behind what they’re doing it’s whether our designers understand that they’re not just interior decorating as if this was a little house cuz although we’ve got lots of different briefs they have to do something that’s appropriate for a beach Chet I want it to be practical and durable as well as stylish cuz we’ve got a lot that they need to pack in here but I really don’t want to see loads of kind of pulleys and hoist and trixy things and things flapping and folding no pressure then I’m super proud of that mural it was such an integral part of my design that I had to get it right and I think I did it was mean so much to get through to the quarterfinals I’m doing what I love and I’m walking away every time proud of what I’ve achieved and I’m just pushing myself and all I can do so Lawrence this is Peter’s Chalet and so his brief was a very kind of multigenerational familyfriendly bolt hole this is lovely this feels very Mediterranean is the big lemon business in eastn Lon grow and it does look like it’s all very foldable when you’re using your Chalet then you bring this outside and at the end of the day it all folds away and goes indoors doesn’t it yeah I rather like that it’s nice yeah lovely we have a look inside yes I like the paint treatment but if the brief was floral I’m sort of surprised by the tropical Foliage for me floral is you know faded chintas and cabbage roses I think it’s got that kind of naive sort of fun thing to it it’s very obviously sort of handrawn which I I kind of like and I’m liking this curve as well somehow that feels kind of Embraces you a bit doesn’t it voluptuous um and the fact that you’ve got this sort of narrower bit here I do like that this is a very simple straightforward way to hang a beach chair little kind of pegs and sticks I think there are a lot of solutions to problems here but the whole isn’t adding up to something that’s really coherent and I’m wondering why I’ve got this enormous Bonet enormous and very high even the the extraordinary elegant length of you and you don’t quite touch the ground I think that’s it’s got a good squid to it I’m imagining you can there’s room for storage as well underneath but I don’t think these no those aren’t going anywhere and it annoys me that it sticks out Beyond the Door the other thing as well is it seems slightly kind of counterproductive slightly weird that the seating is not actually facing out that way where we have all of that wonderful sea um it’s a bit kind of Railway Carriage [Music] yes um I hope I’ve done enough they wanted lots of color they wanted lots of storage have I achieved it I’ve achieved something so this is Tom Chalet for a water sports Enthusiast but he really wanted a kind of Caribbean Beach Shack Vibe are you feeling that I I I’m love the awning these are lovely like these bit of vintage dick chair action yeah there’s a lot of Storytelling and thought gone into how it’s going to be used but is the storytelling telling a story of the Caribbean well I suppose on a level it’s the colors isn’t it it’s that zingy brights well first impressions for me are there is a lot of stuff here big cabinet chairs legs to trip over I’m wondering if all of that stuff is somehow going to fold and hang itself away seamlessly inside I think it’s going to end up looking like a Furniture repository if it does I feel that it’s been treated like a little house I’m just bit like why would you put a great big wardrobe in such a teeny tiny space I don’t know that I really like the seating unit I think this does work and I feel guilty because I’m the only one that’s enjoying it you know I could have a couple of friends around and we could be sitting here really very nicely well the L really helps that doesn’t it because at least you can all get around that table so there’s a nice bit of analysis there and even looks like to see also I like the fact that the seating is not obstructing the doorway I think you need that free flow it’s also multifunctional I do believe we can lift that and there’s extra storage behind it you look very comfortable I’m lounging like a lizard [Music] onwards I’m not overly happy with my space I thought I would be but that additional communal area kind of threw me off a little bit and so it just feels like something’s missing who so this is Monica Chalet and she has designed a gin Chalet I’m feeling sophistication I have to say I love this this feels 30s to me I I think it probably almost certainly is bang on 1930s and they were very clever cuz uh it’s even got a little cupboard door here in which you could keep chairs it has got that kind of slightly fun OT Cocktail Club thing I really like the color palette it’s very cooling it’s just down to is it working and is it fitting right here right now where we are yes does it feel appropriate for a Beach Chalet I mean I love the colors too lessen you slightly about the kind of the gold ceiling but it’s quite fun I don’t mind it love the floor that kind of tile effect vinyl cuz it’s y it’s going to be nice and practical I actually kind of love this or I slightly mourn the ripping out of the original sink but I get why she would have done that I think we should hearo this a bit because there’s always this knee-jerk when you think about upcycle old furniture that it’s going to be something rustic and it’s going to end up as something rustic actually we’ve got a good oldfashioned bit of AO uh which has been reconfigured into this you know Basin unit I really like that that’s that’s rather lovely but then I’m wondering why I’ve got a bog standed kitchen unit here and then a little Trio of things there’s like there sort of there’s an itty bit to this that kind of disturbs me you’ve got two tiny little shelves there with a little bit of trim added to them a few kind of hooks and I think that is the thing that I’m feeling across these Chalet is when the stuff that your eye kind of goes oh gosh that’s quite something oh there’s something else over here that’s when it’s starting not to work because the space simply isn’t big enough to hold it it has to feel just slightly more seamless yeah there it’s a bit sort of junk shoppy a bit kind of oh I need something for the corner I completely agree let’s check out next door I hope there’s [Music] J I am quite chuffed with my art EO Chalet it all came together in the end it was a bit of a mad rush if this shallow got me to the quarter finals I’d feel very very happy I’d feel very chuffed but you just never know this is interesting cuz I can see there’s an enormous amount of design in here this is a very architectural very buildy scheme like this but that’s where I’m going to hide all these chairs the Simplicity of the layout I think does work I love the old ladder for sort of towel rail we’ve got one nice kind of solid kitchen unit and then this furniture can go inside or out but I’m surprised at what he’s done with the shelves because they’re so kind of miniature you know if you were going to do this let’s fill the whole thing and there’s a lot of decoration isn’t there well this is it it’s a technic color Blockbuster of interior design it’s got such heart and passion we’ve got the synchronized swimmers which are frightfully frightfully art decade um and everywhere you look there’s a reference so these sort of stepped arra around the window uh these almost odian Cinema panels down here and then you suddenly sort of swerve off into a different direction and you’ve got the slats on the front of the cupboards which are telling a very different story all together no I I agree I mean I think this ceiling is you know it’s beautiful it’s quite Splendid there’s so much work that’s gone into that and I do like the fact that he’s then taken those details and carried it through right down to the window frame but then I’m starting to lose him a bit when we’ve got it even on the shelves it’s like a little bit okay we got the message why keep hammering at home you know it’s just going to get a bit too much going on in here for such a simple little space the strength of knowing when to stop and I think that’s something that really really really comes into the success of doing a small space here it’s so concentrated it’s so focused everything has to work yeah [Music] I think I probably will be on the sofa I just feel that I could have showcased my design ability a lot more with a different brief but I just hope that Michelle can see that it’s meant to be simple and about nature and rustic and that’s what I was trying to bring to the Chalet it feels clean and beachy to me with the kind of Blues as well cuz it’s not just one blue we’ve got several Blues going on there love the chairs it’s very simple that’s my first First Impressions yeah I’m I’m going to go further with simple I like it because it’s quite understated and respectful maybe it’s the colors maybe it’s the lack of too much stuff but this one feels super spacious it feels super Beach Chalet as well and there’s some really nice detail I love the fact that there’s a a changing screen and that feels so nice and you know this pulls out doesn’t it not very convenient it’s designed to fit snugly which it does oh there we go okay I just think that’s clever nice because sometimes furniture that folds and clicks away you look at it and think oh okay that’s a bit strange but it actually works really nicely as a complete unit and I would imagine that that could then come out and act as a table you bring the chairs in or you know these chairs so you do have space in here for the entire family I think there’s a lot of design authorship going on the big thing is this line The Horizon that keeps everything grounded and centered the Simplicity of just putting that wooden paneling there which just leads completely into it and then painting it the same color just becomes seamless and as you said taking that line around they’re just such easy things to do but they really work they make all the difference well lots to discuss onwards while Michelle weighs up her decision the designers check out their rivals love the colors big colors yeah you’re not so sure that is beautiful so over the top it’s just great it’s so Jack yeah I was going to question his furniture a tiny bit because there’s so much of it I was kind of like where’s it going to go okay now that you mentioned it gosh is it all actually going to fit in [Laughter] here that’s nice yeah her space fails really big it feels mive yeah she’s really left a huge space it feels like a family space it does he’s done it such a good job of hitting his brief I think yeah okay now I’m definitely worried same with a place in the quarterfinals at stake the designers are back in the studio to hear their fate I almost don’t want to know what Michelle’s got to say I could just stay in this nice Blissful ignorance for a bit longer that’ be great how’s everyone feeling bit nervous this week yeah my space is so different than all the other spaces the beach Vibe isn’t there it’s darker and bit more empty and so yeah this this might be it hi guys hi did you enjoy the seaside had a lovely time wasn’t it hot it was so hot was hot it was so hot I swear I saw a seagull lay a hardboiled egg honestly I swear well listen let me put you all out of your misery this is what Lawrence and Michelle thought of your designs they thought there was one Chalet that stood out from all the rest it had a design that showed strength in Simplicity while embracing the surroundings congratulations tamy your F to next week yay I can’t believe it I’m over the absolute moon no more Miss unconfident in it to Wi it sadly that means Michelle would like to see all of you on the sofa and you know this one of you will be going home good luck thank you thank you thank you I’m surpris your pet Peter though I really thought you’d get through yeah what have you both done I’ve got four traumatized designers in there you know the four people that are going to be on the sofa they didn’t keep it simple and I don’t think they were necessarily practical I mean you two must have a Heart of Stone not to like Jack Chalet he’s got those gorgeous women diving on the ceiling he was doing it for the NHS come on you know there was a lot of uplifting stuff going on but a lot of the mistakes he was making he would have stopped himself from if he’d been a little bit more rained in a little bit more reserved about what was going on but it wasn’t coherent because we loved the panels sort of echoing the sort of layering of art Eco but across the kitchen unit it was in something completely different and in a small space which is what tamy got right you have to sort of pick a line pick a single story then flow it around the room Jack to his credit did get the layout right we’ve got that kind of long kitchen unit he included the sink and sort of two symmetric bits on either side so good in contrast Peter lay out lots of bits that there wasn’t a coherence in that Bonet was huge so it’s stuck right out into the doorway and the more I thought about it the more I think that is a really rookie era and let’s talk about Monica well you know what I’m not sure that maybe beaches is Monica’s thing I’m not sure she actually knows what a chalet is from she hated the beach there was this sense of how practical and usable is that space going to be but the colors were lovely I did really like the colors Tom’s teacher pet and I’m surprised to see him on the sofa why did he mess up this week you know what Tom absolutely has real talent but he was the one that put a whopping great wardrobe in there so cluttered yes he did didn’t he yeah yeah and only four of them can go through to the quarterfinals hi hello hi hi hi you so you all showed me some individually great ideas but then you have a small space it really is about taking one line whether physically or literally or metaphorically as a story and playing that out over the space so that when I look through the door I can take in the whole thing as one story I’m not thinking oh there’s something here and something here and something here and that’s the reason you for here and not tamy so Jack if I could start with you I appreciated the detail and the level of construction you’d gone to wrapping around the wall with all the lovely paneling and then the kitchen unit then was completely different kind of paneling so why not wrap it all the way around if you were going to kind of go for it I just thought I’d break it up a little bit so that when you first walked in it was a different color and a different texture I think it would have been probably quite smooth to have wrapped it all the way around upon reflection I think you were bang on with the layout I love the fact that you took the whole of the back of the wall made the kitchen you absorbed the thinkink into it and then the two kind of symmetrical kind of storage panels on either side absolutely perfect but if you’re going to do it do it consistently sure so Monica yes I kind of got the feeling that you don’t really do beaches you just completely rejected the whole idea of beach shiness on any level um well rejected is a very strong word but yes you’re right I’m not going to lie Beach V is not my vibe and so I didn’t really want to put the beach theme inside my shalet because I felt it’s almost unnecessary um because the beach is there if you know what I mean I kind of got that because you did transport me to a gin Club but then I was like yes but these people deliberately picked a shallot on the beach in eastborn and yet that was just completely kind of ignored you did absolutely the right thing with that sink and there was something really fun about the fact that you upcycled what was quite a grandl looking piece of furniture which really very much fitted in with where you were going thank you so Tom yes you put a rather chunky wardrobe in there yeah he had so much sports equipment and I felt like that all had to have a space I love the overhead storage because you’re acknowledging this is what this is used for I’m not sure that shutting it all away in a wardrobe counts okay you furnished a chalet as opposed to adapting and in a small space you don’t want it to feel all cluttered yes that was a very conventional wardrobe shaped and sized piece of furniture but if that had been much narrower you know if it had gone wider you could have probably got a lot more in it Peter you kind of kept the basic layout of where the original pieces of furniture were but did you feel that that seating was rather large I did feel it was large but my brief explained that the client had two Edwardian deck chairs that had canopies over the top I was considering dropping it down to one seat um but I still had to store the two large chairs underneath but did they have to go underneath was there not be somewhere else that they could have gone cuz you had some great kind of hanging ideas and there was a kind of beautiful elegant formality to that doorway that I think you need to be able to see straight into and straight out of and every time we looked at yours there like a bit sticking out which instinctively you just want to kind of sh out of the way yeah but then equally although I really like the kind of you know that you’d made the kitchen units sort of quite sik like the curv tops on that so that that sort of really worked yeah my intention was to free up more floor space because I knew I had the sitting and the storage so I tried to make them as narrow as possible but still practical and I added the wave to give more surface work top see that’s what I mean like I can see you really thought that through give me a little curved Edge even on the seat so at least I can get in the door without taking my shins out and suddenly it’s all starting to work better with that same attention to detail that you’ve shown me on the other side of the Chalet so wow four incredibly talented designers and I do applaud the great ideas you all had I mean your heroic ceiling love the idea of that love the idea of the bespoke folding tables that tucked away love the fact that you upcycled that kind of quite unusual unit and the awning was a brilliant idea all fantastic IC individual ideas but I think one of the very basic kind of rules of design is to get the layout that basic fundamental layout right so to have a piece of furniture that impedes the architectural Integrity of the Chalet so I’m so sorry Peter but I think this week you will be our person leaving yeah okay thank you so much everyone [Music] it was close Tom cuz you had a whopping great wardrobe in there as well but at least I could look through and see everything it’s the experiential kind of level that I am going to be really looking for now okay I’m super proud of myself I challenged myself and I took risks and I couldn’t have foren how massive this would change my life like I don’t know what’s ahead of me but I absolutely cannot wait and yeah I’m a designer now Peter’s had such a great run but at this stage of the competition that was a big mistake in a small space next time kick your legs out that’s how you do it yeah Love Is in the Air Alan I do as the designers are challenged to transform two wedding lodges this just kind of looks like 50 shades of brown I can’t feel my arms in wrap Countryside should have brought my [Music] Wellies you think you can do better why not give it a shot if you fancy try in
