Hopefully just a derailleur hangar, possibility needs a new derailleur. Can’t tell. Are the threads intact on the derailleur?

I highly appreciate any help here.
Just got the bike 2 days ago, I wanted to start gravelbiking. Went up a hill and shifted down, keeping the chain moving. Went into lightest gear, and suddenly the chain was stuck and the derailleur snaped, I couldnt even react. It happened so quick.
Is this my newbie fault? Or is this a manufacturar fault? How can this even happen? Im new into bikes so im quite helpless right now. Dont know if I should call the store where I bought it or just try to fix ist myself.

It’s 2 days old. ANY store will fix it for you if you bring it back. It’s a no brainer: bring it back to the store.

INFO: were you standing up at the time while climbing the hill? Bike should handle that kind of pressure, just have a hypothesis and am curious.

They took the dork disc off but didn’t bother to adjust your limit screws. This can cause your bike to shift the chain off the cassette, jamming the chain. Lucky for you all that happened was the rear derailleur got destroyed. This can cause you to fly off your bike and cause a serious injury.

bikes ARE NOT ADJUSTED from the box. They don’t do it on factory. Seller should set everything up, but not always they spend time on it

Looks to me like the derailleur hanger wasn’t torqued correctly and spun up with the chain over cassette and snapped it. This can happen if it’s not set up correctly.

Just need the derailer hanger! Cheap piece, made to break so the derialer doesnt get too mangled. Shop will replace it l, easy fix. Free or not is hard to say but shouldn’t be more than $20 labor and parts. Easy fix

Grab yourself a extra hanger when youre there keep it in your road side pack. Try and watch the mechanic fix it if possible so you can if it happens again.

You are not screwed!
This is the hanger. It is **designed to break**. It’s protecting the rest of your components from failing.
You need to find the right model of the hanger online, it’s 2 screws to put a new one in.
If you are not able or willing to do yourself, any LBS can take care of this for you. It’s one of the simplest fixes possible.
Possible complications:
1. The chain is bent, you might need a new chain.
2. The hanger is bent, you might need to straighten it or get a new cage, or a new one completely.
Don’t stress. I have done this dozens of times. It has nothing to do with how old the bike is.

What broke is the derailleur hanger which is meant to sacrificially bend or break to prevent damage to the more valuable frame and derailleur on impact, or when some failure like this happens. It’s designed to be replaced.
It shouldn’t cost you anything, the shop should replace it for free. If it does cost you, while that sucks, hangers aren’t very expensive.

The derailleur hanger is meant to break in case if an impact. So it’s no big deal to install a new one.

Looks like the hanger did its job which is to serve as the weak link between the RD and the frame in order to persevere the RD when things like this happen. I once got my chain sucked into my rear wheel after shifting down into the little ring, rear wheel locked up. This resulted in shearing the RD off at the hanger. LBS put a new hanger on, reattached the RD, and she was good as new.
