Hello all, I’m trying to find the best fitness bike for me, here are the specifics:

* I’m in Redmond WA, which has some mildly hilly terrain I’ll need to be able to handle.
* Most likely I’m looking at 80% paved roads and concrete, and 20% gravel / dirt.
* Total beginner but going fast appeals to me.
* Trying to keep it below ~$1500

On my own I’ve narrowed it down to either:

1.) FX3 Disc https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/bikes/hybrid-bikes/fitness-bikes/fx/fx-3-disc/p/35021/?colorCode=blue_bluedark

2.) Dual sport 3 gen 5 https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/bikes/hybrid-bikes/dual-sport-bikes/dual-sport/dual-sport-3-gen-5/p/36826/?colorCode=green

Any suggestions on which of these I should choose. Or is there a better choice I missed?

  1. Definitely not the dual sport. The new gen routes everything through the headset bearings. That makes maintenance a pain. The fx is ok. At that price, I’d recommend the All-City Space Horse microshift. More robust drivetrain and better brakes. And most importantly, far better frame and fork. More comfortable and very tough.

  2. ChutneyRiggins on

Both of those have 1x drivetrains so they might not have a low enough gear for harder climbs. The 520 Trail, Sammamish River trail, EasTrail, etc. won’t give you any trouble but some of the common cycling roads on the eastside do have so pretty steep hills. If you won’t ever ride them then don’t worry about it, but if you plan to get out to some of the backroads around there then maybe look for a 2x bike. I think Kona has some.
