Came across this popular, well-reviewed carbon saddle on Aliexpress, and with its price at $24 USD, figured it’s worth a try on my Brompton C-line Explore.
Weight (could vary slightly on scale):
– Mixed 7D 140mm: 106.7 grams
– Brooks B17 Classic: 530.9 grams (+424.2 g)
– Brompton stock: 416.4 grams (+309.7 g)
I’ve been using the 7D saddle every day for 3 months now, and it’s been great. It’s obviously a different type of saddle than the Brooks B17 or Brompton stock. The cushioning or comfort level is nowhere as close to the other two, especially the Brooks B17 for longer rides. However, because the 7D is so bare, rigid, and minimal in shape, it’s been the least intrusive and most accommodating to my hip movements, especially when I’m riding more aggressively. Once I got used to its bareness, I became comfortable doing 1-1.5 hr rides without any pads and 2-3 hr rides with some pads.
Again, because it’s only $24, I can’t be as critical of the craftsmanship or material choices – but I also haven’t really come across something that I have serious complaints about. Overall great value and fun experience. It for sure won’t be easy on your butt for casual rides, but the 424.2 gram weight saving from the Brooks B17 for $24 was worth a try.
