I'll begin by saying I've never owned a bike before and know nothing other than how to ride one. With that out of the way, I got this bike very recently and want to restore it. I have never worked on bikes, but I have worked on my own cars and figured it couldn't be much more difficult. Besides the obvious new chain/tires and a fresh coat of paint, what else should I be checking and/or replacing? Any and all help appreciated. Also grandad said it's a girls bike, idk what makes it one but he's not the only person to say that, he is the only person I know who was big into cycling some years ago so I'm sure he knows what he's saying.

He’s saying it’s a girls bike because of the shape of the frame.. it’s called a stepover design, and is easier to step over while wearing a long skirt or dress. Check headset bearing and bottom bracket bearing, lube everything up, maybe do some polishing/rust converting, and as you mentioned, chain, tubes, tires. Maybe new rim tape if you’re feeling like being really thorough, and maybe a new seat and you’re good as new
First, you should understand that it’s cheaper for you to buy a brand new bike than to repair this.
That bike has no brakes, so reverse peddling is your brake. I would look to see if that works. Then you need new bearings, wire brush, tires, tubes. I would use zip ties to see if you need to true wheels. Everything is super corroded so I’m certain every bearing is gone. You might need cups and cones and you for sure need a chain.
