you should use your front big chainring when using your small gear in back to prevent that
Have you ridden it? Does it make noise or drag when operating normally?
I think the problem is from pedaling backwards. The derailleur feeds the chain in properly from below. Pedaling backwards there is nothing to feed the chain onto the sprocket. Also no tension in the top of the chain.
Just stop pedaling backwards.
