These are a couple shots of my 16 year old son at one of our local spots. The pics don't really do it justice but this is a pretty good sized and steep rock roll. We don't take pics or video much, just ride usually, but yesterday a couple guys we talked to on the trail (who were hiking back up after noping out of what we were riding down) commented how awesome it was that we're riding together. One of them said his son turned 14 and doesn't want to ride or ride with him any more. It just reminded me how lucky I am to share MTB with my son.
He started riding MTB when he was 11-12 and I had not been riding for years (I gave up bikes and motos after too many near misses) so I got back into it.
Watching him progress has been really cool. It wasn't that long ago that he wouldn't roll down this, and he'd be hanging off the back of his bike.all sketchy, etc. Now, he rides up tall and confident and gets down over the center.
Now that he's 16 and putting on some muscle, he's getting too strong and also too good for me to keep up with most of the time. I'm sure there are other Dads here (Moms too) who can relate. I try to keep it fun, find new places to ride, and take him places that push our limits sometimes, but not on every ride. We've been getting into racing Enduro a little too. I'm thinking about a BC road trip as a HS graduation celebration.
Anyways, it's just cool to reflect on it so I felt like sharing. If you have kids who ride, how's their progression been? What's next for them/you?
