Hi, I am looking for a bike to commute to work (5 km one way). I am quite short (5 feet), which might play into the bike selection.

  1. Men's Gravel Bike Shimano A050 – RC 100
  2. GT Aggressor Pro Mountain Bike, 21 Speed, Aluminum Frame

Both seems to have my size.

I was wondering which of the two bikes (open for any other suggestions at around the under $500 mark) is better for me. Appreciate any suggestions! Thank you and have a great day!

First time posting, so please let me know if the formatting needs work :).

  1. These are two quite different bikes. One is a mountain and the other is a road. The mountain bike has a suspension fork which I would call a bad thing in this price range, because it is low quality and consumes a chunk of already low budget. The road bike only has 7 speeds, which can be an issue if you have hills on your commute.

Another consideration is your comfort. Both bikes can be uncomfortable if they are not your size, but road bikes especially so, because often they have geometry designed for lower, more aggressive position.

Saying all that, I would try the road bike (triban) and stay away from the mountain bike because of fork and (arguably) lower level components. Do not buy anything without trying, you are small and picking the right size can be hard.

Also look in the direction of hybrid bikes. They are using mountain bike components, but designed for city usage, so they do not have suspension forks. They are comfortable and fit your purpose very well.

I would recommend the gravel bike for commuting, as it will be more comfortable and efficient for road use and distance riding.
