Long, philosophical post below. Attached pic for attention, these would not be good bikes to tour on.
Hi, I’ve been lurking on this sub for a bit, mostly just ogling the incredible photos you guys share of far off, exotic places… or at least, more exotic then the lovely city of Cleveland. And I just wanted to ask the big questions about what drove you to do long tours, as well as how you managed to, mostly from a financial perspective?
I myself have little reason not to: I’m in my twenties, with no property, kids, relationships, or good friends who would miss me. I have ample savings to fall back upon. I don’t have any real “roots” where I live (besides my parents and job) and have always been curious about living elsewhere.
But what about you? What other reasons might people have to leave everything else going in there life and take to the roads?
I’m also curious about HOW you guys do it, financially. Do you work remotely, and work off of a laptop during evenings? Is your job on a contract basis or seasonal, with frequent periods of unemployment? Do you just have a really awesome employer who allows for long vacations? Are you able to live frugally enough while touring that it doesn’t completely wipe out your savings? And what do you do with your “stuff”- possessions, vehicles, apartment, pets, etc?
My biggest concern is that I only have two weeks of vacation, so a long tour would require that I quit and potentially not have the chance of being re-hired, which would make it necessary to move elsewhere.
