North Ferriby | East Yorkshire, England.
11.04.2024
In this walk we take a stroll through the pretty village of North Ferriby which is situated on the north bank of the Humber Estuary, about 8 miles west of Hull. We start on New Walk then take a stroll around the beautiful church gardens before heading towards the shoreline of the River Humber with the magnificent Humber Bridge in the distance, walking through an idyllic little woods along the way.
Ferriby is an ancient village which was formerly famous for a stately and magnificent priory of The Order of Knights Templar founded by Lord Eustace Broomfleet de Vesci during the reign of King John in 1200 AD.
Its most impressive landmark is the All Saints Church with its magnificent tall spire and quaint churchyard and its pink blossoming trees. Designed by John Loughborough Pearson and completed in 1848, the church was designated a Grade II listed building in 1968.
The village is home to the Duke of Cumberland pub, the Anne Turner allotments and playing fields, and North Ferriby FC who won the 2014–15 FA Trophy after beating Conference Premier side Wrexham at Wembley Stadium in 2015 under the name North Ferriby United A.F.C.
The village is served by Ferriby railway station which is on the Selby Line and passing through the village are the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail and the Trans Pennine Trail long distance footpaths.
Along the Riverside Walkway which leads all the way to Hessle Foreshore and the splendid Humber Bridge, is the site of the earliest sewn plank boats known outside Egypt that were discovered in 1931 by local man Ted Wright on the shore of the Humber. The latest dating technology has determined that the Bronze Age boat could be 4,000 years old, making it Europe’s first known seacraft. In addition, Bronze Age round barrows were found near North Ferriby by archaeologists excavating the land on which the A63 junction was built where there was also evidence of Iron Age and early Romano-British activity.
|| About Walk The World Away ||
Hello everyone, my name’s Jamie Paul and this is my walking channel. Since I love the outdoors and walking in nature so much I decided to start filming my walks so that I could share them with you lovely people wherever you are in the world. In an ideal world I would probably build a small house on top of one of the Lake District fells, grow my beard down to the ground, and walk forever through the beautiful Cumbrian mountains until I could walk no more. Sigh. But instead, being a more practical kind of bloke, I am on the search for smaller, more accessible walks around England that I can capture on film and share with you all.
I focus my attention on the most scenic and peaceful walks I can find, either in the countryside or along the coast, and I do love to check out old villages, cities and towns too if they pass the picturesque test and have some historical interest thrown into the mix.
Let me know in the comments if you know of any beautiful places to amble around that I just haven’t considered yet. And yes, this a new channel so bear with me as I endeavour to bring you high definition 4K video with quality sound. I have an arts degree in photography, so I know a little bit about how things should look, and quality is the name of the game here.
And as always, please like and subscribe if you love to walk too, and we can build the channel together as we walk the world away.
Peace,
Jamie Paul 🕊️
