Hi all. This is my first post to this community. I commute daily in all weather with panniers. Here are some modifications I have done to reduce rattle noise, reduce wear, and add functionality to my panniers. I hope these are useful for others.

In these photos is my Brooks Norfolk bag. It is essentially an Ortlieb with different fabrics. It uses the Ortlieb QL2 mount. Most of these modifications could be done on other similar panniers.

With this setup, there is no rattling noise even after years with my Axiom rack. For the backing areas which contact the rack, I have used Velcro tape. Use the soft and not hooked Velcro side to prevent snagging clothing. If the hook/locking mechanism rattles even with the closest fit shim provided by Ortlieb, place a small piece there. Velcro brand tape has good adhesive and abrasion resistant. I used this tape while working at a packaging line where moving products were wearing away at expensive machine parts.

On the inside of the bag, a loop of strong fabric, such as a Cordura, is attached to the backing plate by using the existing screw and bolts. A carabiner is attached to this loop for keys. A neoprene smartphone sleeve, punched with two holes, is attached to the other bolts. This is where I keep my phone and wallet for quick access.

The original Velcro-style closures for the side pouch wore away. From new, it often snagged on clothing and feel it did not match the style of the bag. I bought pack of snap buttons which included the tools to install for about $10. No sewing is required. I also used these buttons to replace Velcro on my gloves which kept catching on clothing.
