One of my biggest motivations to upgrade was the 1×12 drivetrains. It’s been great so far. Both shifters are positioned alone the underside of the right handle? It’s a little bit of a stretch to move from one to the other with my thumb. Just curious if this is the norm these days. Might try to readjust it a bit to make it more ergonomic. Thanks.

Edit: posting pics bc I probably don’t know what I’m talking about

  1. Yes it is normal for them both be there.
Mtbs tend to only have one shifter (2 levers one for easier one for harder) depending on brand they are either made to be both activated by your right thumb or one of the two can be activated by your right index finger.

But yeah you can and should adjust the position and angle as needed to make it comfortable.

It sounds like you may be pushing the trigger lever with your thumb when you could more easily pull it with your index finger.

The more common shifters have a thumb activated lever for gearing down (moving the chain towards the larger sprockets) and an index finger activated trigger lever for gearing up (to smaller sprockets). On some shifters the trigger lever can work by pulling or pushing.

Rapid fire shifters are great at m6100 and upwards. One of them can be pressed either way. Only have to use your thumb for both now, not reaching around with your index finger.

Yep, it’s been the norm for decades. But I understand how you feel:until 3 months ago I rode a ’90s Bianchi mtb with the levers on top of the handlebar, took a couple of rides to adjust to the (way superior imho) modern ways 🙂

So there is a little bit of “slide” fore aft adjustment in that shifter mount. get a torx key (t25 maybe) slightly loosen the bolt holding the shifter to the brake and see if you can slide it aft a little. This might help. You can also get a separate mount for the shifter that will make it easier to position the way you like. You can also just rotate the whole brake / shifter assembly down to make it easier to reach the shifters.
Less expensive set ups do not have as much adjustments, but you should be able to get the shifter into a reasonable position.

If you bought this at a bike shop, take it back to them and ask them to help you adjust it so you can more easily reach the shifters. If not, take it to the bike shop anyways and give them 10$ to help you adjust your set up.

  7. Yes it’s the norm now. Just adjust them so they’re easy to reach both. They’re less likely to hurt you in a crash if they’re under the bars
