I am trying to remove the lock ring so I can replace the outer chain ring on this FSA AGX crankset. I bought the LRT-3 lock ring which supposedly fits this lock ring. there is a small amount of play. Any reasonable amount of force causes the LRT-3 to come off the lock ring. I tried it both ways with the splines inside the 4 little slots on the lock ring and outside them. I have it in a vice. I’m worried it’s going to strip the lock ring. what am I doing wrong?

Are you using a torque wrench to try and loosen the lockring? DO NOT USE A TORQUE WRENCH TO BREAK A NUT OR BOLT!!!!
Torque wrenches are for tightening ONLY. Using a torque wrench as a breaker bar is a great way to permanently damage your torque wrench.
You need to figure out a way to apply as much downwards force on the tool as you can, that’s the key. First things first, I’d hit it with penetrating oil multiple times over a couple days. Anything you have will do, from WD 40 to liquid wrench, to seafoam, to PB Blaster. They all work just about the same, even if some people just irrationally hate WD. Spray the lock ring with PB Blaster.
Using wood blocks, clamp the crank and tool in a vice. Loosen the tool with a big wrench/spanner.
Also, buy a spare lockring because these things are made of cheese and round out super easily (guess how I know).
