I replaced my gravel bike’s stock TRP HY/RD brakes with GRX ones. I kept the old disc. Maybe I’ve been staring at them for too long, but aren’t the pads supposed to make more contact with the disc? Some OCD part of my brain wants the lower edge of the pads to be closer to the inner edge of the disc. I could need some reassurance that I didn’t run into some installation or compatibility issue at this stage.

Yeah, that doesn’t look right. It’s not so much that the lower edge should be lower on the disc but rather that it’s visible that the upper part is not touching the disc at all. Besides the obvious less than optimal contact surface and friction, you would also reach a point where the disc has eaten enough into the pads that the upper parts would just press against each other, providing no actual braking.

Share some more photos mate. It looks fine to me from here, but I’m not sure I’m seeing it properly. As long as the entire pad is in contact with the disc (and there’s no overhang), it doesn’t matter much if it’s not perfectly centred. That said, I can’t see the entire contact patch, or how you’ve installed the callipers

Stupid question: do you have a set of pads in there? If not, add them and check. As long as most of the pad make contact with the disc it’s fine.

Is that the piston visible with no pad covering it? Yeah no that’s definitely not right lmao
Did you maybe install the pads incorrectly somehow? They should be centered over the pistons

The piston shouldn’t be visible, it means that there are no pads or mounted incorrectly.

Yeah, that doesn’t look right. It’s not so much that the lower edge should be lower on the disc but rather that it’s visible that the upper part is not touching the disc at all.
