Finding I would like taller gears, I know the explr derrailuer apparently works for only 1x only.. Currently have a 11-44 cassette. Any one tried putting a smaller cassette and a 2 sprocket crank to convert it to 2x and if so what did you use?

You can’t really run the XPLR der with a front der, you’ll run into a lot of issues. Pretty much, you have to swap the entire drivetrain to go to 2x
You can now pair xplr with an fd.
You could go with two routes:
1. Keep 1x but go with eagle mtb cassette and eagle axs rear derailleur, and new 12 speed chain (not flat top), so you could have 10-52t in the back and 40t in front or 38t or 42t. You could keep existing cranks and swap chainring if needed
2. Go 2x with near rear derailleur, cassette, front derailleur, double crankset, new chain (flat top). You could have 10-36t in the back and 43-30 front (axs wide) or 46-33. The most economical way to find discontinued force axs d1 (first gen), or sram rival axs
I have been using the AXS XPLR with a front derailleur for a few hundred rough miles, and have experienced zero issues. I posted about this awhile back. I think the only caveat, for me at least, is I have to run it in sequential mode. I prefer this mode anyway so I never have to think about shifting the front derailleur manually.
