Again, i am super new to mountain biking, but have done it a handful of times in the past. I would ideally like to take it to a fast trail/park with jumps as i did grow up on dirt bikes but will definitely be starting out slow. I will predominantly be riding around Asheville, NC (any tips on areas appreciated). Currently looking between $500-$1000 on my first bike that i can learn on.
nope. get something newer. “top of the line” stuff from that long ago is worse than entry level stuff from 5 years ago. Mountain bikes changed a lot around 2017 or so and I would only consider bikes newer than that. $1000 should easily be able to get you into that era.
a 1x and a dropper post are easy indicators that you are looking at a modern bike (well… or a modernized old bike which you probably don’t want)
That is an absurd price for that bike. It’s a 20 year old bike. There have been massive changes to MTBs in that period. Assuming the tires hold air and it pedals it’s worth about $250 as a mellow path and around town bike. It’s not worth anything as a legit mountain bike. It may be worth more to a retro enthusiast.
For $650 you can get a fully modern used hard tail with solid components and will be way more capable and confidence inspiring.
