Step 1: throw riveted cranket into trash (or donate to collective so they can recycle it)

    Step 2: buy different crankset

Reading between the lines the old bike has a square taper bottom bracket so you wanted to put the better chainrings on the old spider? You can’t. You’ll have to swap the bottom bracket to something compatible with the crankset you have.

  3. Can’t replace the chainrings by themselves. You’ll need to replace the crankset. (It’ll be cheap with no need to remove the chainrings if you replace the whole thing with another riveted crankset.)

Nope. Replace the whole crankset or buy one with removable chainrings. I’d strongly recommend the latter since it’ll be more convenient in the long run.

They do make square taper cranks with Ella cable chainrings.
