I live in a “moped country” so bike theft are uncommon – it happens, but “a teenager seeing an unlock bike so he steal it for a fun ride” is not a thing here.
I use my bike like how most people would use any other mode of transport – ride it to the usual parking space (ex: beside the street), stop the vehicle, walk away … Yes, you don’t even need to “lock” your car nowadays with these new fangled crypto keyless A.I. stuff they got in them.
But EVERY adult riding a bicycle, even if it’s a rusty department store bike, are so scare of their bike got stolen so much they have bice-induced anxiety peeing at a gas station … I’m not making these up.
People here are talking about bike lock in the same manner as if the country is full of junkies and crackhead roaming the street with power tools looking for bike to be sold to the highest bidder on craiglist, as in the US or Reddit’er realm…
It’s funny because some don’t even bother pulling the key out parking their moped yet any “public bike parking spot”, a metal railing on the sidewalk, WILL have a zombie bicycle chained to it.
…. However many years ago there was a bike fad happening here that are quite unique in that the “influences” of the fad originate from thhe very top of the country’s power structure and society, so the “elites” actually went along too – ACTUAL “societal” elites, not “dentists” elites … In a situation where people would buy high-end bice just to ride a fundraiser charity events and a huge “world-class” public bicycle track got build, things trickled down and everything involving bicycle flourishs, eventually a gang that would not steal, but rob bicycleese out of their SirVelo and Bummton emerge.
