For retro grupset I highly recomment deore xt m739, I bought M500 last year which still had its original shimano altus/exage stuff in bad shape, so I changed everything.

Mtbs of this era often have low stack/long reach vs a normal drop bar road/gravel bike. This makes fit difficult, as even with a short stem, they can often have a very aggressive riding position.
The existing canti brakes will work with modern brifters, but to use v-brakes you will get special levers, a “travel agent” style adaptor or “mini-v” brakes.
In terms of groupset, pick one that fits your budget. Microshift will have new brifters to fit your existing drivetrain, or you might be able to get used Shimano ones to work (or Campagnolo if you’re willing to fiddle around a bit).
That paint scheme is great, the red-white-blue is an homage to classic Ritchey bikes.

Don’t change the original paint sch…damn, that is gorgeous.
I bought this bike for a few euros at the market with the goal of restoring it. My idea is to use it in the city and for rides between 40/50 km.
Do you think it is possible? I also uploaded a picture of how I would like to customize it. Where to start? Any advice on purchases to make?
Looks like a small frame, definitely check if you will even be able to ride it comfortabely before spending money on upgrades and renovation

I’ve never done a rebuild although I should consider It since i have an 80’s cannondale sitting in my garage.
