Darmstadt is a large, independent city with 162,243 inhabitants (December 31, 2022) in the south of Hesse, the administrative headquarters of the Darmstadt administrative district and the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. The city belongs to the Rhine-Main area and is one of the regional centers in the state of Hesse. Darmstadt is the fourth largest city in the country Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden and Kassel. It has had the official additional designation of Science City since August 13, 1997 with which it has distinguished itself since the post-war period.
