SL-A410 mid-90s Shimano RSX I guess
velobase.com says 7 speed/index but it doesn’t have the big d ring like other shifters do, or any kind of markings to indicate a switchable function.
Was really hoping I could use it for a 8of9on7 thing, but it’s looking like I might not be able to.

I dont think it can be used for non-indexed shifting. I have pretty much the same shifters but from ’89 (had to take a closer look to see that yours are different) and they can only be indexed by turning the additonal D-ring, which you dont seem to have.

First of all, that’s a downtube shifter, not a friction shifter.
Second of all `SIS` stands for `Shimano Indexed Shifting` and I don’t see a way to set it to friction like the 8/9 speed ones.
Yeah that’s purely for SIS only. I have a light action A450 downtube shifter that has an adjustable tab/ring that you can switch from friction to SIS.
A 7sp downtube shifter can be used to shift an 8sp cassette as the spacing is almost identical. But the final click doesn’t exist, so it doesn’t stay well in the low gear.
