My left brake is fine, it is firm all throughout braking. However, my right brake is limp in the initial portion of braking but then goes firm.

this is usually caused by friction in the cables/housing. they are likely worn and need to be replaced.
Cable or hydro?
Your brake cable is probably loose within the housing. So when you pull the lever you first take up the slack cable before actually engaging the brake.
You need to undo the bolt on the brake and pull the cable tight while also adjusting the distance of the pads since they’ll tend to move away from the braking surface once you loosen the bolt.
Then retighten.
