If you have an 8-speed cassette, use a 9-speed chain. The 8 speed is wider and you wont have as much benefit from the “narrow-wide” feature of the chainring. You can always use a chain designed for MORE speeds; you just can’t use a chain designed for less speeds.

There is 0.2mm internal width difference between inside of 8 speed chain, and inside of 9/10/11 speed chain, so it won’t be as tight fit, but it will work.
