I like to put some rubbing alcohol or brake cleaner on a shop rag and rub it back and forth across sections of the chain. It’s just chain grease that’s picked up dirt or dust.

Grab a chain scrubber tool like Park Tool makes, follow the directions, let dry, and relube with your lube of choice. It’s by far the easiest way and you’ll get a shiny clean chain.
