Bénouville is a commune of 180 inhabitants living on an area of 3.02km2. The town is located on the coast of the Seine Maritime department near Etretat. Since January 4, 2019, it has been part of the new Le Havre Seine Métropole Urban Community. The origin of the name of the village comes from “villa” a Latin word meaning rural estate and Bjornulfr, a Scandinavian warrior thirsty for glory and money who around 915 followed Rollo during his invasion of Francia by the Seine, the latter installed his chiefs in the villages in order to have a “foot on the ground” to rest.
In 1195 the village was called Burnouville, in 1793 Bénonville to become Bénouville in 1801.
The presence in the fields of numerous flints, cut stones and gold and silver coins prove that the village had intense activity from prehistory to the Gallo-Roman era.
The Roman ditch to the west of the village towards Etretat is in reality a Celtic construction widely copied by the Romans.
The bend of the “vé vigne” (old vine) on the road to Etretat attests that from the year 850 until the 19th century vines were cultivated, which takes us back to a possible coat of arms of the village representing 3 bunches of vines. and 4 fig trees, another symbolic crop from the Caux region… But there is no certainty.
The history of Bénouville during feudalism is closely linked to that of Etretat.
After the 100 Years’ War Jehan le Porcher and Hector Fourmentin governed the village.
Jacqueline, daughter of Hector Fourmentin, married Jacques Nourry in 1525. The family was ennobled in 1582 and then bore the name DE NOURRY, whose coat of arms (found in the church of Bordeaux en Caux) represents on an azure background 3 heads of griffins d ‘gold each holding in his mouth a silver wyvern (the wyvern is the symbol of hospitality).
Hector built a well-camped castle overlooking the valley separating it from Bordeaux en Caux (valley where the railway line of the rail bike passes) this fortress was completely destroyed.
