With landslides closing Highway 1 near Big Sur, by bike-touring friends and I are interesting in biking it, car-light. We did the same thing during the closure in 2018 and it was epic! [See this story I wrote](https://medium.com/@steventjones/biking-californias-closed-coastal-highway-c83007f58f0c) about it for details. So I’m wondering whether any bike-tourers have made it through this year? Anyone interested in trying? Anyone have any good intel? Anyone want to coordinate on a ride and/or lobbying Caltrans to allow it? This would be good for local businesses and great for all the bike-tourers who ride from Canada to Mexico (or some portion of it) every year.

If the road is being worked on then it’s a construction zone. CalTrans is not in a position to certify a construction zone as safe for the public. Sorry!
Most riders are waiting until the end of the work day before surreptitiously passing through.
