3 months on stock pedal of salsa journeyer. Was a bit wiggly so thought I needed to tighten it up. Instead I found a ball bearing salad. Suggestions on upgrade? Mostly use as an urban daily commuter that I like to push.

You want to stick with flats?
OneUp Composite are a good value. Plenty of good choices under $50.
Clipless would be a much more involved conversation.
Crank Bros Mallets are nice flats with SPD-SL option. I prefer the Shimano PD-EH500 and SPD-SL cleat, still gives you the option for flat and power of clipless.

If you want pedals that last 10000+ miles there is only one manufacturer. SHIMANO.
I have RaceFace Ride pedals on my commuter / grocery getter. No metal pins so no scratching anything or yourself. The grip and platform is still really good for being plastic. I even used them for some 30 miles gravel rides with a few rough descents and didn’t have any issues while wearing proper mtb flat shoes.
