Hi all

In the past few years, I’ve done some bikepacking trips with friends. One of my big dreams is a long bikepacking vacation with the family.

To prepare ourselves, we spent 9 days in Czechia. We cycled from Pilsen to Brno via the Sumava National Park. The plan was to stay overnight in campsites and in the wild. A shower after wild camping was a must. Unfortunately, many campsites were closed. Something to keep in mind when bikepacking through Czechia.

The Czech landscape is diverse, ranging from large forests, agricultural areas, and charming villages to true wilderness. Especially the Sumava National Park was challenging. It was still cold there, and it was snowing.

We didn’t complete the entire route. Since this was our first real family bikepacking trip, we made some beginner’s mistakes: we didn’t have the right clothes. That’s because we experienced diverse weather, ranging from bitterly cold to summery days with temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius. Additionally, we were unaware that the Czech camping season hadn’t started yet, so we expended a lot of energy searching for accommodation or a spot for wild camping. When we couldn’t find a camping spot in the northern part of Brno, we decided to end the trip in a hotel in Brno itself. Despite the challenges, we had a lot of fun and are planning to tackle the British divide this summer.

  1. What trailer is that? I’m currently pulling my toddler in a Thule Chariot, but when things get bumpy, it’s not the best. How does that one handle some rougher terrain?
