I took my aluminium/carbon framed road bike out for the first time this year and noticed the corrosion had got worse, to the point of pushing the paint off at the top of the seat stays. Signs of corrosion started after it was a few years old but it seems to have accelerated this winter. The seat stay to dropout joint doesn’t look great, neither does the fork dropout or area around the caliper mounting bolt.
The bike is 11 years old, covered about 5k miles and always stored in a dry metal shed.
Does anyone have experience with this kind of corrosion leading to failure, am I pushing my luck by continuing to ride this?
I wouldn’t mind an excuse to build up a new bike, all the other components and wheelset are going strong with plenty of life left in them…
