What stretch of canal was that you were riding? The towpath looked very smooth, I know that not all the routes into & around the Birmingham canals are so Brompton friendly. I rode my Brompton the Solihull to Birmingham towpath, which was mostly easy going but some parts with old brick cobbles were a Brompton nightmare = get off & walk sections.
