Honestly, for a first bike, you can just go ahead and trust the size chart, especially when she’s right in the middle of the range – it will fit her just fine.

I would say that new riders would generally feel more comfortable on a smaller frame even if they can technically fit the next size up. Given that she fits right in the middle of the S, I would trust the guide. I’ve owned 2 Giant bikes in recent history and the size guide was pretty bang-on for both of them.

Just go to a LBS and hop on a similar or same model. Giant is a very common brand and there’s almost certainly an LBS near you that carries them.

  4. If stuck between 2 sizes always go for smaller. But either way she can make the xs or s work.

  5. Does she have proportionally short or long legs?

If short, go with the extra small, it feels more comfortable and safer for new riders.

  6. According to the chart, you have three choices. She is at the top of the recommended range for an extra small, the very bottom for a medium, and smack in the middle for a small.

For what it’s worth, I’m just shy of six foot, and ride a medium/large Giant. Which my height puts me in the middle of the size range.

    Buy a small.

  7. I’m 5’7 and I have a M/L frame. I have a long torso and it feels the most comfortable to me. She should try a few out IMO. I bought a bike from the LBS last week and they encouraged me to do a medium frame.
